Perfection is the enemy of good enough. Early in my career, I was a perfectionist. I believed I could design the perfect system (queue Tron 2 reference). A project sponsor once told me "Perfection is the enemy of good enough" and I raged inside about how silly they were. Years later, I repeated that same phrase to coworkers and even later, employees. During that time of growth, I realized, by definition, good enough IS good enough. Whether it is two pixels to the left is fine, or solving 80% is more than good enough, spend your efforts where there is maximal value returned; usually that isn't perfecting an area. You can always come back if it wasn't good enough. You likely never will if it was.
Here's why you should start aiming for "good enough." (Seriously.)

✨ This is my favourite subject I'm constantly working on: the struggle with perfectionism. It's a journey filled with highs and lows, but one worth exploring. I'm learning to break free from the chains of self-imposed standards and embrace my unique flaws. ✨ I see the beauty in being perfectly imperfect. #perfectionism #selfimprovementjourney

I loved what Charly had to say in this Ted talk. We can apply it to recruiting. Finding those candidates who just might be good enough. Allowing our managers to use their leadership skills and knowledge to lift them up. It is taking that person who might just not be the perfect candidate and giving them an opportunity. True success in leadership is taking someone who might not be perfect and giving them the tools and direction to succeed. There is no perfect candidate. Leaders can get them close.

Is this boring to you? Cuz I dig it. No colors, no icons, just the essentials tied together in a beautifully simple way. The best marketing knows how to take something that is often overthought and boil it down to the cleaniest, clearest message. #marketing

From a graphic design perspective, this works. But a million years ago, when I was an architecture student, if we submitted a design this functional, we would be told we lacked creativity, intelligence, and [words I shouldn't use on this app]. 🤭 Seeing this makes me wonder how often I chase "better ideas" when a simple, perfect one may be right in front of me. In that rigorous design program, we were forced to break down and breakaway from the idea of simple conventions. But the point was always to understand complexities and translate them into what should appear as simple designs. Even typing that makes my head hurt. 😁 That said, my foundation of respecting and dissecting conceptual frameworks tends to make me reach for the complex when the simple will surely do. When it comes to communication, whether visual elements or words on a page, clarity is crucial.
