The Copa America is back! After eight years, the oldest national soccer championship in the world is returning to the United States. It will feature 10 South American countries and six countries in North and Central America and the Caribbean. Over the next weeks, fans from around the continent and the world will be able to watch soccer superstars such as Messi, Vinicius Junior, Valverde, Páez, and Pulisic, hoping to win the cup in the final match to be played in Miami. While soccer is still considered a sport that appeals more to Latin American and European audiences, American viewership has steadily grown in the past decade. A recent Gallup poll found that 31% of Americans identify as soccer fans- an all-time high. A different survey showed that soccer emerged as the U.S.'s fourth-favorite sport, close to baseball and basketball, which were placed in the top two and three, respectively. Lionel Messi's move to Inter Miami has significantly impacted the sport's popularity in the U.S., turning their games into major events and igniting "Messi Mania" nationwide. What would the economic impact be? The previous edition of the Copa America in the U.S. was highly profitable. Nearly 1.5 million fans attended the Copa America Centenario games at ten venues in the U.S., where average crowds totaled more than 46,000 fans per game – a record high in the tournament history. Projections suggest that each host city could earn around $30 to $50 million in revenue this year, and the attendance could surpass 2 million fans. Additionally, the tournament's viewership could potentially triple its reach due to the expectation to watch some of the matches around the globe. An exciting month lies ahead for the U.S. and the whole continent. The Copa America represents an exciting vehicle for investment and brand positioning (think of all the collateral events during the tournament), and it will be an excellent test of what to expect for the entire global championship in the next two years: the FIFA World Cup 2026.
