In the Shadows: A Gender Analysis of Informal Work in Kosovo, launched recently by KWN aims to improve understanding of the informal economy in Kosovo from a gender perspective. It seeks to provide gender analysis needed to inform EU and Government efforts to address the informal economy and other economic development strategies in the context of Kosovo’s EU Accession process. The report can inform the forthcoming Government strategy to address the informal economy. This research also contributes updated data for Kosovo related to United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator 5.4.1: “Proportion of time spent on unpaid domestic and care work, by sex, age and location”. Additionally, the research seeks to pilot improved ways of measuring informality, including indicators contextually specific to the Western Balkan (WB) region. I grew up in a working class, migrant household, so tonight's #CSW68 event on "Advancing gender equality and women's empowerment in the context of poverty and migration" felt particularly impactful to me. The overall event discussed the value that migrant women bring, both to their home and migration country. It also questioned the financial and legal protections that are put in place for these women. Migration is often seen as a powerful tool for poverty reduction. Most of the times we think about this in terms of what migrant women are 'gaining' by moving from the global south to the global north. Yet at the same time, migrant women aren't seen as a profitable segment, which may lead to their exclusion from financial services. A representative from Women's World Banking showed an interesting case study that challenges this: Over 1.2 billion USD is sent home annually by Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand, over half of which are women. A second keynote speaker that captured my attention was the representative from the Women in Migration Network (WIMN), who put a strong case forward about the misconceptions we have about 'lower skilled, temporary workers' that migrate through short-term bilateral agreements. According to WIMN, these workers stay over 60 years in their migration country and do bring useful skills to their migrant countries. Such categories may be particularly harmful when considering labour rights and human rights. As we celebrate Women's History Month, we want to acknowledge the particular challenges faced by migrant women, girls and LGBTQI individuals. According to IOM - UN Migration, an increasing number of women are migrating independently from Central America and the Caribbean. Migration has the potential to create positive outcomes and contribute to women's empowerment. It can open opportunities for: higher income, asset ownership, self-esteem, decision-making power and new autonomy. On the other hand, gender and migration can intersect to produce negative outcomes, such as multiple forms of discrimination, exploitation, and stigmatization. One of the strategies put forward by the Global Compact on Migration addresses both gender inequalities and gender-based violence through national labor laws, employment policies and programs. This approach recognizes the independence, agency and leadership of women and seeks to reduce their vulnerability by increasing their access to labor markets. While gender-based inequalities in the employment sector are prominent and concerning, inequalities of migrant women in the Irish Labour Market exceedingly surpass any imagination. Coming from people's perceptions of migrant women and discrimination policies and practices often deflate and crush their hopes of being and having equal opportunities as everybody else. No matter how intelligent and capable and how many qualifications they hold, their struggles and disadvantages are double: being a woman and a migrant! But then again, migrant women have shown their strength and resilience over and over again by pushing through any unjust treatment. To all migrant women, never give up your fight, dreams, and goals! SOLIDARITYNOW has published an #empiricalstudy shedding light on "The Reality of Employment for Migrant Women in Greece" Drawing on insights from a survey reaching out to 215 women from 28 countries as well as 11 companies, the study reveals: - The overall deterioration of the employment level of migrant women in Greece compared to their countries of origin. - The underutilization of their skills and qualifications. - Regardless of their level of education and prior experience, migrant women often find themselves in low-skilled jobs with precarious working conditions. - A significant share of women work in undeclared jobs lacking safety nets.
