Today is the day of Giving...there are more than 1.1 million Black Women and Girls in CA. Its the 5th largest population in the nation. More than 67% Black Women are single mothers, 80% are primary bread winners and a quarter live in poverty. Compared to our female counterparts, we have the highest unemployment rate, the highest high school drop out rate, largest number of unhoused, and are more likely to work two jobs to make ends meet as well as have the highest maternal and infant mortality rates, highest percentage of chronic diseases. Yet, we are still standing...making things happen. Join the California Black Women's Collective Empowerment Institute's vision to improve the lives of CA Black Women and Girls by supporting our work. Let's stop the systemic barriers that negatively impact our outcomes.

As we continue our work as an organization in the present, it is always good to reflect on the past and beginnings of The Woman's Exchange. On May 20th, 1883, The Missouri Republican carried an article about the founding ladies of The Woman's Exchange which noted: "Starting out upon the principle that there could be no greater charity than helping those who try to help themselves, the ladies are bound to succeed if the earnestness of intent and never failing attention to details can guarantee success." Although this newspaper publication ceased operations in 1919, the principle of The Woman's Exchange has never changed nor has the devotion to women in our community. Today, our organization continues to utilize sales from our Tearoom & store to support and empower others to lead healthy and productive lives. We work with a variety of individuals including divorced or widowed women, women who require additional income, women who are unable to maintain regular work due to household needs, and early-stage entrepreneurs developing and launching their businesses. #WomansExchange #Woexstl #NewspaperArticle #PastQuotes #Reflection #Nonprofit

#DidYouKnow Less than half of 1% of almost $70 billion in global foundation giving went to Black women, girls, and trans people in 2018. In the same year, 81% of Black feminist organizations reported lacking the resources to meet their goals. This persistent disparity highlights the pervasive issue of misogynoir within traditional resourcing models, evidenced in ongoing attacks against funds, grants, scholarships, and other initiatives meant to benefit Black women and girls. We cannot talk about grantmaking and philanthropy without addressing the inequities and hurdles Black women and Black-women-led organizations face when seeking funding. 14 anti-DEI bills have been passed in 12 states since 2023, shuttering DEI offices at colleges and universities across the country. Ironically, many of the public institutions that award the highest number of doctorates to Black women and other historically excluded groups — like the University of Florida, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Texas A&M University — are in states that have passed laws banning DEI offices, programs, and trainings. At every level of higher education, thousands of students now find themselves without the crucial support systems they need to navigate their degrees successfully. We’re at a critical crossroads. We can either lament the fall of DEI in higher education or take action. At Cohort Sistas, we’re leaning all the way in. As universities and companies choose to abandon their commitments to equity, we're taking the lead to provide the resources, mentorship, and community that research has shown increases doctoral retention and completion rates for women and students of color. We're determined to ensure that the reversal of policies advancing equity in higher ed doesn’t deepen the already significant racial gaps in doctoral education. Our "Together for Equity" campaign is a call to all who believe in the power of education and the importance of representation. Development teams should implement strategies that account for the potential of female funders. ➔ To address the underrepresentation of women in senior leadership positions at nonprofits, organizations should focus on providing mentorship, disrupting male-centric norms, and pushing for women to be promoted at the same rates as men. ➔ Women are often motivated by a desire to improve their communities. They tend to give more frequently and are more likely to make long-term charitable commitments. They also frequently include their children in philanthropic decision making, creating a sustainable pipeline of support.
