There are times in life when you know you could not have done better! Where you have gotten every ounce of reward from something that should have never given so much. Victoria Sheridan's recent post brings back a flood of memories. It was pre-pandemic and I was working for a Seattle-based startup that shipped frozen meat nationally. They had a warehouse in Scranton, PA. We had outgrown the 3PL that we leased space from. It just so happened that there was a vacant late 1800's three-level former meat packing plant located a few miles away. I don't know what I saw in that space but despite the creepy feel - it was like our team. Our team was comprised of a mix of professionals and recently released felons. Like the team - the building was in need of a second chance. So over the course of a couple of months - we retrofitted this former meat packing plant into space that was not only usable but scalable. I could talk about the lives that we touched but with the recent fire that destroyed the building - it's better to talk about the building. It deserves that much. There was a draw bridge dock that lowered into the alley. It took seven minutes down and seven minutes back up. Holding down the button that powered the wench was the short straw that nobody wanted to draw. There was the parking garage in the back that had a ramp to the second and third levels that the original occupants used to house their horses, a hay loft, and the carriages that were used to deliver hams throughout Scranton. There were the smoke houses that we didn't use and were afraid to enter. There was a freight elevator that required the pulling of a rope to move it and would often run away. And there were sounds that the building made that I've never heard before and never want to hear again. But like our team - the space was functional, it was challenging, and it was ours. It became part of our culture and identity. A piece of history that resided in a part of Scranton that is in the midst of a resurgence. And while the three foot thick walls were no match for a fire that wiped away the physical presence of a time gone by - the memories will live on. In our careers, let's be more like this sunflower – seeking the sunlight in every situation, turning our faces towards growth opportunities and standing tall with confidence.
