I obviously had to share some harsh realities of the best way to achieve a positive ROI on that magnum bottle of rosé at brunch on a Tuesday.. feat #DALL3 Cannes Lions is the epitome of experiential marketing. Standing out and generating a return on investment is no small feat. There are only two variables your boss can rely on to calculate ROI and determine if you’ll be attending again next year - Outcomes versus Costs. Outcomes: To ensure valuable returns, avoid gaps in your schedule. While many advise leaving room for serendipity, remember that 'luck happens when preparation meets opportunity.’ Chance encounters only occur if you attend early morning workouts, dinners with the right vendors, and after-parties conducive to meaningful conversations. Skip most formal content sessions; if your company invested in sending you to an event like Cannes, you likely already know the key insights. Costs: Outside of investing nine figures, the best way to achieve a positive ROI at Cannes is to be smart about where and how you invest. As the proverbial incumbent in my career, I focus on minimizing expenses without compromising the convenience of a tight schedule. To maximize time, I centralize my meetings in a single location that doesn’t charge €16 for a café au lait.

Yesterday, I had a pleasure of participating at Lindt eWeek, organized by my good friend Trent Bwin and the broader Lindt eCommerce and Sales teams. While playing only a small part, being invited as a guest speaker for the "Ask Me Anything" session, I couldn't help but notice how incredibly well organized and thought-through the whole event was: 1️⃣ Clear structure with internal and external speakers educating the broader Lindt teams on ins-and-outs of eCommerce. 2️⃣ Linking the role of the eCommerce to the overall company's strategy. 3️⃣ Bite-size learning over the lunch breaks through the whole week (with high-quality catering provided) to ensure a high turn-up rates for people in the office. 4️⃣ Well moderated live video-conference for people working from home. 5️⃣ $50 gift-cards for the "best questions", to encourage more people to be curious and participate in the conversation. 6️⃣ Senior level support with Sales Director and CEO being in the room throughout the whole week and actively asking questions themselves (if SLT can find the time and think that it's important to participate, surely everyone else can find the time, too, right?). 7️⃣ Plenty of opportunities for everyone to ask questions both during and after the event, plus, links to more eCom related videos for those who want to explore the topic further. 8️⃣ Finally, (but, arguably, one of the most important factors of this being a very successful event) - reasonably "unfiltered" conversations and a 100% safe space for unconventional questions and contrarian thinking that challenge conventional wisdom. In my opinion, this is THE WAY to get the full picture and to not get succumbed to the "me-too" movement blindly copying what others are doing because it seems to be working for them. For any eCommerce teams that are looking for the ways to educate their colleagues on what it is that they are doing, how it fits into the company's strategy, and why should everyone care - consider organizing similar events and getting your SLT to participate and back you up.
