How do you participate in your local community? I was 38 years old before I voluntarily participated in any organization outside of work, or Church. Then because of circumstances, I played the role of Mr. Mom. It started with being on the Site Council for my kid's school. Since then, I have been on the PTA, and been PTA President. Currently serving on the Board for the local Hospital Foundation, a city Board, and on the Board of our county travel DMO. I mention this because by serving in a variety of capacities, I've learned to see the world from a viewpoint different than my own. It has given me the opportunity to learn more about non-profit organizations, and a chance to meet regularly with some intelligent individuals. Cove families created a beautiful quilt depicting their responses to the questions, "What will you take away from Cove?" and "What does Cove mean to you?" The quilt was then taken apart so each child could give a show and tell about their square, and the squares were given to the families as a keepsake. I often get asked how to start a non-profit and after 12 years my advice is to find an existing non-profit and align with them. Utah has thousands of non-profits and each of us need more volunteers and donations. So, just so you know how we do it. Running a non-profit takes endless amounts of time, energy and pure tenacity. Here are steps 1-5 that we needed to complete. Not to mention the monthly and annual expenses to make it all work. Whew!!
