As the #schoolyear's start approaches, #schooldistricts are racing to fill teaching and support roles. Weare, Henniker, and Stoddard's district faces a tough challenge, with four teacher and ten paraprofessional positions vacant across towns. Weare's middle school is hit hardest, lacking three teachers, notably a seventh-grade math #teacher. Superintendent Jacqueline Coe notes hiring struggles, unlike previous years when vacancies were filled by August.#Vacancies vary among districts; lower-paying ones suffer more as #teachers seek better pay. Even well-staffed districts like Bow, Dunbarton, Concord, and Hopkinton seek paraprofessionals and bus drivers. Nurses, crucial for special needs students, are scarce, paralleling the wider healthcare worker shortage. Departing teachers often seek local opportunities. Low entry rates, politics, and poor pay contribute to vacancies. Finding certified nurses mirrors the healthcare crisis. Concord adapts with adjusted caseloads and bus routes, but part-time roles and low unemployment limit options. Weare aims to present a new teacher's contract in March, striving for better salaries to compete. In a challenging landscape, districts work to entice educators while confronting multifaceted obstacles.

There are so many articles about teachers striking in various states. It's no secret teachers have been one of the most underpaid professions to date. Many other professions, nurses for example have had strikes and contracting disputes frequently in the past. Although I'm not a teacher, I do believe that something must be done for the profession as a whole before all the passionate teachers flea to better paying careers; after all they do have bills to pay like the rest of us. Many of them breaking their bank to fund their own classroom supplies, yet minimum wage is near a starting teacher salary in some states. Do you think the teacher strike will grow in size like the largest nursing strike in US history? My favorite way to address a gap is to ignore it. 😏 It’s 2024, nurses work on a different schedule. 🔸 We travel and take months off at a time because we can. 🔸 We stay at home with family, for babies, or just because we need a break. We take breaks from nursing for a million and one reasons, and it’s time employers stopped getting jealous that’s how our lives work. If you must address a break, we suggest keeping it simple. Information about your personal life does not need to be divulged because it can lead to discrimination. If you don’t want to ignore the break in employment, you can address it in your cover letter or on your resume. The best approach is to share what you did to advance your nursing knowledge or transferable skills while unemployed and that you’re excited to re-enter the nursing workforce. And before you say it - we know some employers will hold it against you. We wouldn’t want to work for that type of company anyway.

Teachers and school nurses are severely underappreciated. And honestly, under-resourced the majority of the time as well. This is my Dad and Mom. My Dad’s been teaching high school U.S. History for about 30 years and: 🕰️ Spends hours in the evenings and weekends putting together tailored lesson plans for all of his students—meaning his regular session students, his AP students, his ESL students, and his differently abled students. For every. single. lesson. 🫶 Dedicates part of every Wednesday to “Wellness Wednesday” since the majority of his students do not come from financially and educationally privileged upbringings, he focuses this time on their mental and emotional health and helping them learn tools to manage and cope with difficult realities 👨🎓 Devotes a large part of every summer “break” to staff development and trainings, re-writing lesson plans for next year’s students, and learning how to integrate the district’s newest technology requirements into his day-to-day in a way that’s intuitive for his students My Mom’s a medical powerhouse and school nurse overseeing multiple schools, and: ✍🏼 Writes individual care plans for qualifying students based on their medical history, learning needs, and abilities 🩺 Goes above and beyond the requirements from the school board on scenario-based training to be hyper aware of and well-trained to respond to adverse drug interactions and overdoses overlooked by the board 👥 Treats every student interaction with grace and the desire for them to feel known, cared for, and safe at school 👆🏼 These are just the tip of the iceberg. So while it can be easy to get absorbed in the world of SaaS, know that there are people like my parents navigating a very different, often underappreciated playing field. If you can, take some time this week to reach out to an educator or professional in the school system and let them know you’re grateful for their hard work. #JauntsWithJess #AppreciateOurEducators

Being an adult student is far from easy… 📚 💻 📓 I teach students of all ages and backgrounds for people to start their journeys to become the backbone of healthcare: nursing assistants. They juggle many things in their lives. Learning something completely new such as the language of healthcare. Healthcare is filled with many terms and confusing jargon...🧠 🤯 Taking care of families and/or households…🏡 Full-time or part-time employment… Improving their communication skills as English is their second language… As an adult student myself, I get it. Life still goes on even when we have many tasks to do. Juggling life and studies takes hard work, time management, and effort. For all of the adult students out here. I’m rooting for you. We can do this! 💪 What are you studying? 📑 📖 #adultlearners #adultstudent #healthcarecareers #healthcareeducator #FutureofHealthcare #furthereducation #keepstudying
