🌟 This February, The Downs Law Group celebrates Black History Month🌟 Today, we Honor Charlotte E. Ray. ✊🏾 Charlotte Ray was born in New York City on January 13, 1850. Charlotte was the first African American woman to practice law in the United States, the first woman to practice in the District of Columbia, and the third American woman of any race to receive a law degree. 🎓 Charlotte graduated from the Institution for the Education of Colored Youth in Washington, DC after the Civil War in 1869. Initially, she started her career as a teacher, but later, she decided to enroll at Howard University's Law School. She studied there for three years and graduated on February 27, 1872. As a result, she became the first African-American woman to receive a law degree in the United States and the first female graduate from the Howard University School of Law. On April 23, 1872, she made history again by becoming one of the first women to be admitted to the bar in the District of Columbia. 🙌🏼 In 1872, Charlotte established her own law office in Washington, DC, where she specialized in commercial law. However, being an African American woman, it was challenging for her to find clients. After a few years, she was compelled to shut down her practice.
