Is now a good time to go into data science? Seeing all the layoffs that are reverberating throughout the tech world, getting into a tech-oriented job like data science can seem like a bad idea. Companies such as Otka and Docusign have announced staff reductions of up to 7%, while even the magnificent seven have made cuts in the past month. Securing a data science position in this climate might seem challenging. But there is some good news. There is a notable trend emerging – traditional companies are increasingly embracing data science and tech-driven roles. Step into a hardware store, and you'll find dozens of products, from rat traps to barbecues, that are now equipped with apps and data collection capabilities. Loyalty cards are becoming ubiquitous, as companies strive to glean insights from customer analytics. While these opportunities may lack the glamour of big tech, they signify a growing demand for data science expertise beyond the tech sphere. Considering the evolving landscape, those eyeing a career in data science may find opportunities beyond the traditional tech industry. Why is saving time and money not a top priority in the data engineering world? 🤔 There's never enough time. There's never enough money. And as we've learned in 2023, data engineers are no longer immune from layoffs. But yet the most popular data orchestration tools remain overwhelmingly open-source. They remain overwhelmingly complex. They remain overwhelmingly time-intensive. They remain overwhelmingly expensive. I don't understand. I'm always searching for more efficient ways to do my job better. A new tool that saves me time while providing the same or more of the features I want and need? I'm trying it out. Are data engineers just programmed differently? I know this much. Those who don't adapt to shareholders' demands for increased efficiency will fail. Those who can't do more with less will fail. I’ve always found it a bit ridiculous that we’re always expecting engineers to have this or that experience. Go, Python, PHP, Javascript, Java, C/C++, .Net, OCaml, Ruby, Fortran, Haskell, etc etc that’s before we even get started on tools and frameworks. Some JDs also require multiple languages and frameworks. I remember the joke where one JD asked for 6 years experience in React when it’s clear it was only invented 5 years ago. Honestly. I find it pretty tiring and it really ignores the core fundamentals. Can the candidate learn? Do they have a great track record? Are they proficient in what they know (and so by extension could learn others)? If you want a candidate with specific specialisms then I hope they’re prepared to pay for it. Let’s put faith in developers basic fundamental abilities again. Train, coach and mentor and grow our engineers into roles.
