The green transition is the most significant systemic change of our time. The transition will, however, require the right capabilities and competences within organisations to succeed. Understanding how systemic sustainability is, and needs to be, is the key to leading better business decisions now and in the future. At the Building Competences for Sustainability Transformation workshop today, led by Aalto University Executive Education and Professional Development and Gaia Consulting as part of our co-operation, sustainability and HR professionals came together to discuss the competence development needed to successfully susform. Strategic sustainability is both a mind-set questions and requires knowledge also on the highest levels of the organisation. The best sustainability knowledge needs to be made part of decision-making to be influential. Sustainability is a hard-core science, not only an attitude question. Deep knowledge and internal sustainability consultants are needed to drive science based decision making. However, building competences at the highest levels of management is not enough for a true transformation. Different roles require different competences on different levels. All employees have to be trained in the principles of systems thinking and should be required to examine the impact of their work and how they could work more sustainably. With competence development, it is paramount to build a bridge between the needs of the business and the strategic sustainability objectives to align a sustainability narrative that drives sustainable growth whilst creating added value for customers, shareholders, and the society at large.
