It all started with a pain in the neck. Then it was a nagging feeling that I just wasn't as productive as I used to be. The struggle to concentrate, my shortening attention span, a lot of uncharacteristic procrastination. The combined effect was an infuriating doom loop in my head. What if my failing brain power was irreversible? Maybe I'm losing it? Maybe this is ageing and I can't do anything about it? Maybe I'm just useless? Maybe I just need to slow down / retire / accept the inevitable (I'm not even 50 yet FFS). What the hell is wrong with me? That is one hell of a doom loop. Then I realised I had my head in my phone when the kids were with me. Which I've always hated doing. And then I realised I was on it a lot of my day. My pick up rate went over 100. I definitely wasn't happy. Plus I'm not modelling good digital behaviour to my kids. And I wasn't even enjoying it. Then I noticed I was even thinking about checking my phone, while I was talking to other people and doing other things. And I realised again, "I'm not enjoying this". Layer on perimenopause, plus some other health / ageing things I need to deal with. My brain fog was going off the charts, my productivity going through the floor. STOP. This is what I've done: The easy stuff: - I worked out the apps I really need to use and put them on my laptop - I have taken lots of apps off my smartphone - I have changed my status on WhatsApp and put email signatures in saying that I don't check these things on a smartphone anymore - so call me if its urgent! The hard stuff: - As of this weekend my main phone (when it arrives) will be this basic Nokia - Most times I will leave my smartphone in a drawer. I'll use it if I need to take a really good photo and upload it somewhere, or if I'm travelling and need help navigating. What I'm hoping to achieve: - I want to re-stretch my brain by looking up my destinations in advance, writing down the directions I need, resisting checking google every time I think of something, making myself commit things to memory. - I want to limit my twitchy hands from picking up my phone all the time. - I want to let my twitchy brain relax because it knows there isn't an internet connected device in reach - I want to time block effectively and just read emails and WhatsApps twice per day - I want to retrain my attention span, get clearer thoughts, be more productive, be less distracted. I want to stop the doom loop. - I want my brain back - as in my personal, internal, thinking brain. It needs a bit of time to recalibrate. - I want to hang out with my people and be in the moment. - I want a smartphone free adulthood! I'll let you know how I get on. I believe that we've normalised an insane use of technology on a day to day basis. It needs to be used to its full effect in a way that has boundaries, not in our pockets all the time. What do you think? Are you tempted to do this too?

I have been thinking about this a lot recently as well. Yesterday at my daughter's athletic club every parent was on their phone. Every single one. All looking down, as their kids were trying their hardest to get a fastest time, or their new PB in long jump. It made me sad. My kids have probably seen me on my phone more times than they should. We make sure at home that we don't have our phones at meal times, etc. BUt then I have my phone out, even when watching shows and things, why?! I am going to think about how I use my phone going forward, and maybe even get one of these phones

I got sick of everyone staring at phones and kids competing with a black box for parents attention. I have managed for the past three years with an old nokia. Only issue now is the kids now have phones and are starting to go out on their own so I have had to switch back to an iphone so they can reach me (simple calling would be way too complicated (and not very cool) 😩 I wish there was a tiny phone with whatsapp, calls and nothing else - waiting for someone to make one Nokia 😊

Yes! (he types on his smartphone) I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that I'm addicted. About a year ago my phone was out of action for 2 weeks. I did everything I needed on my laptop, it was great. The only thing I missed was renting ebikes. I need to make a plan like you Lucie Harrild otherwise it'll dominate my summer.

I am already there - mainly in response to the growing concern of seeing how this digital technology is affecting my family. I have removed all social media apps from my phone and use a large screen for as many things as possible. I now read much more and my brain slows down much faster. I sleep better and have (some) capacity to focus on my overall health.

I am using Apple Watch Cellular as smartphone replacement /dumbphone when I am on the go. It works great because it allows me to be reachable and use Maps and sporting apps :)

Best wishes with finding a better balance - I recommend having a look at the REDD project strategies for reducing digital distractions: https://redd-project.org/strategies/
