I believe that creatives, especially the good ones, sometimes channel, yes, spiritually channel, the essence of what's going on in the world and produce work that reflects it like a mirror. With this spot, I believe this is what Apple is doing, whether they wanted to or not. There are no creative mistakes here. Ticking metronome, instruments, human statues and faces, and basically everything operated by humans being smashed and condensed into a neat, convenient digital product that can basically do everything. Yes, they are promoting its thin new product. But like any smart ad, the commercial isn't focused directly on the product. Because at the end of the day, people don't REALLY care about a marginally thinner device. They care about how consumers can relate to it emotionally. "How can people actually use it?" Here's where it gets interesting: Apple channeled the vibe of creatives in this ad: The world feels like it's becoming smaller for humans. The world feels like AI is about to operate and run everything that otherwise was managed and created by humans. Products are getting smaller, more digital, more convenient in every way. Quite literally, it feels like everything around us is being transformed (crushed is fitting) into a totally different reality where human usefulness and creative abilities are being hydraulically pressed out. I don't know whether Apple intended for this ad to be this dark. They probably did not. But I do know that they perfectly channeled the vibe of an increasingly digital, AI driven world. And in that, Apple didn't make any mistakes they need to apologize for. Maybe they failed in promoting their product. But the creative direction for how we feel about the world around us is spot on. And sometimes the cold hard truth is scary, but it's also necessary to reveal. And perhaps as we look down the barrel of our feelings and reality via this commercial, it should act as a wake up to reinvigorate our charge in maintaining human relevance and minimizing the power we hand over to digital brains. Search behaviour is transforming off the back of #genai and #digital maturity & Google is both threatened and working hard to transform its platform and #advertising services as a result of it. The flywheel effect of #ai on advertisers was in full display at the recent Google Marketing Live event in Syd this week and given there were 700 people in the room, interest is right up there. Yet #ai take-up is rightly being tempered by policy and concerns over #ethical, on brand usage in businesses that can stand up to Australia's tightening privacy laws as well as hearty consumer scepticism around transparency of how data is being used.
