This report from McKinsey & Company is a reminder that we need to think of health care for women to promote healthy living as oppose to ‘Women’s Health’ which many associate with female anatomy and reproductive organs. “Almost half (47%) of the women’s health burden reflects conditions that affect women disproportionately i.e depression, migraines, autoimmune disease. It’s not for women-specific conditions such as maternal and gynaecological (5%) that we might more traditionally associate with women’s health. While longer life expectancies for men and women have been a societal success story, this is not the full picture. Despite living longer than men, women spend 25% more of their lives in poor health. Health burdens have a heavy impact on women’s lives, with ripple effects for broader society. To address these issues, the World Economic Forum and the McKinsey Health Institute have released a new insight report as part of the Forum's Women’s Health Initiative. The report addresses the root causes of the women’s health gap (focused on science, data, care delivery and investment) and charts a number of ways forward to close this gap – from incentivizing new financing models to investing in women-centric research and implementing more inclusive health policies. Addressing the women’s health gap could potentially boost the global economy by at least $1 trillion annually by 2040. Investing in women's health – which is more than just sexual or reproductive health – is therefore not only a matter of health equity, but a chance to help women have expanded workforce participation. This is not a political post. It is a celebration that the needle is finally moving with regard to women's health research. As we close out Women’s History Month, I have renewed hope that we can bend the historical trend of women’s health positively in the future.  President Biden recently signed an executive order to improve women's health research, thanks in large part to the tireless advocacy of individuals like Maria Shriver. And there's even more reason for hope—Congress is considering a $12 billion bill to support these efforts. For too long, women have been overlooked in health research, leading to lower effectiveness of treatment, worse care delivery, and a significant lack of understanding of their unique health needs.  And, the economic implications are immense. A recent report by the McKinsey Health Institute highlighted that closing the women’s health gap represents a $1 trillion opportunity to improve lives and economies worldwide. 1 trillion-dollar opportunity for society!   In a recent report made by McKinsey it was shown that by closing the gap in womens health could help boost global economy by USD 1 trillion yearly.   The main gaps identified in the report was:   🔬 Science: Many of the current studies have predominantly been done on men.   🗃️ Data. Health burdens for women are being underestimated leaving important conditions out   🧑⚕️ Care Delivery: Women more often experience suboptimal care and have a lack of specialized care solutions   💰Investment: Due to the lack of focus on womens health historically there is still a gap and underfunding towards womens health relative to their prevalence.   There are a lot of facts and details in the report, but one that struck me was that women on average spent 25% more time in poor health. This is a staggering number, but luckily there is a growing focus on closing these gaps. 🔍Continuing the spotlight on the morbidity-mortality paradox, the White House announced yesterday a $100 million federal investment into research and development for women's health. As context, the McKinsey Health Institute recently reported on the stark landscape of women's health. Let's unpack the numbers: ● 47% of women's global health burden arises from conditions that disproportionately affect women and are non-reproductive issues, such as depression and autoimmune diseases. ● Women experience delayed diagnoses compared to men, with one Denmark study citing up to 4.5 years longer for conditions like diabetes and 2.5 years longer for cancer. ● Viagra worldwide sales hit a record $2.1 billion in 2012. Women-specific conditions such as endometriosis and menopause have similar prevalence and high unmet need → enormous economic potential ● Addressing the gap in women's health research could boost the global economy by $1 trillion annually by 2040.
