This is a good article. It captures the breadth of information one can expect to be exposed to studying renewable energy at Illinois State University. Reflecting on my journey since graduation and entry into the industry, I've often found myself appreciating the education, opportunities, and preparedness provided to me by Dr. Loomis, Dr. Aldeman, and Dr. Jo. Rutgers University has launched an ambitious wind energy research center, marking a significant step in New Jersey's journey toward becoming a global leader in offshore wind energy research and development. This multidisciplinary collaboration involves three schools and multiple departments at Rutgers, bringing together the expertise of environmental and marine scientists as well as engineers. The center consists of two primary components: the design of a Net-Zero Wind Energy Test (WET) Center, a large testing facility planned near the Jersey Shore, and the creation of a smaller WET Lab located on the Rutgers–New Brunswick campus. This pioneering venture aims to tackle scientific and engineering challenges associated with testing floating offshore wind turbines. The WET Center, one of the first flagship interdisciplinary projects of the newly created Rutgers Climate and Energy Institute (RCEI), represents a "signature investment" into renewable energy scholarship and education. The project received approximately $1.1 million in funding from the Rutgers–New Brunswick Chancellor’s Office and was selected through a rigorous review process for its potential to catalyze exploration, collaboration, and innovation. The WET Center will enable researchers to test near-full-scale versions of enormous wind turbines designed to float in the deep ocean, while the WET Lab will focus on smaller-scale models. This initiative is expected to significantly contribute to New Jersey's vision of becoming a leader in offshore wind energy research by 2035, with Rutgers recognized globally for its multidisciplinary approach to the economics, engineering, and the social and environmental science and policy of wind energy. West Islip Public Schools, New York // Energy Performance Contract // NORESCO Annual Electricity Production: 3,801,761 kWh Project Cost: $8.97 million Annual Cost Savings: $497,811 (guaranteed for 18-year term of contract) By working with NORESCO and its local subcontractors to install solar capacity totaling 2.9MW DC, school leaders were able to offset more than 85% of electrical usage at seven schools while funding more than 70% of the project through New York State Building Aid. The project, completed in 2022, was accomplished through an energy performance contract. Relying on renewable energy reduces the schools’ emissions of carbon dioxide equivalents by more 2,300 metric tons each year. Rhode Island’s offshore wind leader Ørsted announced higher education grant commitments totaling $5.5 million as part of its proposed Starboard Wind project, including a proposed $2 million to the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI). If Starboard Wind is selected to move forward, Ørsted will provide grants to CCRI, University of Rhode Island, and Roger Williams University. Ørsted’s proposed 1,184-megawatt (MW) Starboard Wind project would deliver clean and reliable offshore wind energy at stable and affordable pricing for Rhode Island homeowners and businesses for decades. If selected, Starboard Wind would result in more than $1.1 billion of direct, private investment and expenditure in Rhode Island, which would come on top of Ørsted’s existing investments and commitments in the state.

Check out the NEW: Higher Education Clean Energy Grant Pilot Program!  The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) proudly presents the FY2025 Higher Education Clean Energy Grant Program, aimed at Maryland's Institutions of Higher Education (i.e., accredited two and four year colleges and universities). This competitive - statewide program is designed to foster a holistic approach to sustainability by supporting the adoption of on-site renewable energy technologies, the integration of strategic energy planning into operations and academic curricula, and the advancement of workforce development in the renewable energy sector. The FY25 Program’s focus will support the installation of solar panel installations on campuses that complement strategic energy planning, sustainable curricula, and workforce development. The program seeks to create sustainable, energy-efficient campuses that serve as practical learning environments and hubs for renewable energy education and job creation. Projects under this program should not only contribute to the institution's sustainability goals but also ensure that students are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the sustainability and renewable energy sectors. Anticipated Program Budget: A total of $9,200,000 is anticipated to be available from the Strategic Energy Investment Fund (“SEIF”). The amount awarded may be more or less, depending on the quantity and quality of applications received. On average, MEA expects to provide approximately $1.15 Million per project.
