As a first-generation American, my family's journey embodies the spirit of possibility and opportunity that defines this great nation. My father came from Greece, dreaming of becoming a doctor, but found success as a chef and restaurant entrepreneur—an unexpected path that highlights America's spirit of possibility and opportunity. Governor Tim Walz's speech deeply resonated with me. Coming from humble Midwest beginnings, his rise reflects the same perseverance my family experienced. His declaration, "We are not going back," echoes a profound truth: we must protect the freedoms and ethos that make America the leader in the world as a free nation. The threats posed by Project 2025 to our freedoms are real, but we cannot let them deter us. Kamala Harris's belief in the promise of America—that everyone should have the opportunity to join the middle class and fulfill their potential—is a vision we must strive to uphold. Our family's story is a microcosm of the American dream, where humble beginnings can lead to extraordinary achievements. We must ensure that America remains a land of opportunity for all, where dreams can be realized, and futures can be built. Listening, are we? “The descendants of our First Peoples have now asked us to repair the jagged rip in the fabric of our shared history. Their request is that this be done through the one means directly controlled by Australia’s citizens – an amendment to our Constitution. Their request is that this act of constitutional recognition be in the form of listening. They merely wish to be heard in relation to laws that directly affect their lives. That is all. No right of veto. No right to decide. Not even a right to determine how their voice is to be heard – for that is a matter reserved to Federal Parliament. Just a right to be recognised and heard as a distinct voice, amongst the many others, enshrined in our Constitution.” Important answers to important questions for us all to explore are shared in the article: ❓ Is the proposal to create the Voice racist? ❓ Is it not just as wrong to recognise descent as it is race? ❓ Aren’t Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders divided on this question? ❓ Is there any guarantee that a Voice will rapidly improve the lives of First Nations people? ❓ What if we change our mind about the need for a Voice? ❓ Isn’t it undemocratic to confer rights on some citizens that are not enjoyed by others? ❓ How can we vote on constitutional change without first having all of the details about how it will work? I would love to see us all take this moment to truly explore the topic (outside of political positioning and media agenda), challenge ourselves, our own experiences and expectations and biases. I would love to see us all step toward one another, even in divided opinion, with respect and appreciation. This seems to be utterly necessary for our future. The Ethics Centre

Interesting new book! Without warning in the spring of 1933, Germany turned itself inside out, from a very deeply divided but functional republic into a one-party dictatorship. Hitler and Goebbels and their cronies driven by hate and not intellectuals seized the opportunity that an well meaning but shaky government led by a doddering senile 83 year old chancellor provided. In Hitler's First Hundred Days, award-winning historian Peter Fritzsche offers a probing account of the pivotal moments when a rather slim but clear majority of Germans seemed suddenly, all at once as if on the spur of the moment, to join the Nazis and support and construct the Third Reich which then devastated half the world in less than 10 years and led to a world war that only was finally ended by the massive destruction of two major cities with nuclear weapons. The hated Jews and anyone else who even nominally opposed the Nazi regime were eventually rounded up into concentration camps where most eventually died from overwork, disease, starvation and when unable to work or if women and children, put into the gas chambers.
