I was looking forward to this #NearboundSummit session, having been in sales leadership, VP Sales & CRO positions in my career. We can all improve and I was looking to do just that. The ten mistakes Jason M. Lemkin at SaaStr finds when companies hire VP Sales or CRO's. 1) Hiring a VP that doesn't really understand the product during the interviewing process. 2) Hiring a VP of Sales with no one lined up to follow them. Good sales leaders have an ability to bring sales people with them. They've got network to bring into their team. 3) Hiring a VP of Sales that doesn't want to sell any more themselves. 4) Hiring a Sales leader that doesn't want to go visit customers in person. 5) Hiring a Sales leader that doesn't want to spend time closing deals. 6) Hiring a Sales leader that's cynical, particularly about startups, techs, and sales overall. 7) Hiring a sales leader that's constantly on social media. That doesn't mean there's no value. Some is good, and it depends on where the company's at and what it's trying to accomplish. Good for recruiting and branding. Do 1-2 a week. (Personally I'd want a bit more detail on his thoughts around this. I find that it's all about the content, not the number of posts or time spent.) 8) Hiring a VP of Sales that really wants to be a COO or CRO, etc. and not really be a VP of Sales. The best VP's of Sales don't want the other stuff. They want to push the sales to close. 9) Hiring a VP of Sales that hasn't been a VP of Sales for a while and wants to get back. Consultants, bloggers, influencers that want to get back to being a VP of Sales is hard for them to get back into. 10) Don't hire a sales leader that you're only hiring because they worked at X. If you're hiring them, mainly because they worked at X, it's probably not the right reason. What's the hardest job in SaaS sales currently? I think the middle management positions are the toughest right now (VP sales, sales directors, sales team managers etc). Unless you're in the parts of tech that are growing (we're hiring in those currently), those managers often have a team of unhappy sellers that aren't hitting their number and are understandable anxious about their job and what to expect in 2024. Above them they've got C level leaders asking them to deliver revenue that's not available right now, and often with less resource (due to not hiring or often even replacing leavers). Getting squeezed from both sides isn't fun, it's a tough task even in up markets. My advice? If there's not a major "leave" factor outside of the market conditions, I'd advise staying put. We've seen companies swap out their VP sales in an attempt to hit their number, when in fact being behind target was little to do with the quality of the manager and everything to do with SaaS sales in 2023. I know it's not an easy gig right now, but, we're definitely seeing an uptick, and whilst the golden era of SaaS is probably dead, I'm certain 2024 will be a better year. #holdtight #salesleadership #hiring #saassales
