I watched a bit of this. Please watch David Attenborough’s introduction because it really sums up the challenge we’re all facing but few seem to acknowledge and even fewer are truly tackling. On a day when we remember the huge sacrifice of a generation who put our today ahead of their own tomorrow, we need to respect that today and sacrifice just a little of our own wants for the tomorrow of future generations. At EAV, we’re not in this esteemed league of £1m prize winners, but as we watch the struggles of the likes of Arrival and Volta Trucks, both companies who dreamed of changing the way we move around our ever-growing, highly-populated cities, we take encouragement from the tonnes of carbon EAV’s saved from the atmosphere with a simple change of vehicle. We’ve also given improved efficiencies to many businesses, again, by changing the way they operate and how they move goods. EAV may not be in Singapore to win an award, but, we are the first British automotive company to win a European award since the 1970s - International Cargo Bike of the Year 2023. Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo NEWS: The UIM E1 Series World Championship, the world’s first all-electric race boat series, is rolling out a new sustainability-focused league to run alongside its racing competition. The E1 Blue Impact Championship league table will challenge teams to drive positive impact by mobilizing society to reverse the effects on ocean and aquatic ecosystems. The initiative, which is being trailed this season before rolling out in season two, will see the Championship’s nine teams compete to become the E1 Impact Champion. To climb the rankings, teams must undertake activities such as support for aquatic conservation and restoration programs, and helping advance research and technology to protect marine habitats. At the end of each season, beginning with the current season, fans will vote for the team to be named Blue Impact Champion. These votes, which account for a third of the total score, will be supplemented with the votes of an expert jury, made up of ocean scientists and conservationists, who will account for the remainder of the score. “The launch of the E1 Blue Impact Championship provides a blueprint and pathway for each of our participating teams to become active partners in our mission and for them to be acknowledged for their innovations and inventiveness in supporting appropriate initiatives,” said professor Carlos M Duarte, E1 chief scientist and E1 Blue Impact Championship committee chair. “It’s an exciting challenge for both us and the teams and provides a new and progressive arena in which to compete.” https://lnkd.in/e5TQ4y5e

Traditionally, National Laboratories are federal research assets that are primarily focused on critical government scientific programs that cannot be accomplished any other way. Any excess capacity can then be made available for non-governmental use through various mechanisms. That was precisely the thinking behind designating the US Segment of the ISS as a National Lab and requiring it be managed by a nonprofit. The policymakers of 2010 intended CASIS to focus on using the ISS as a catalyst for terrestrial breakthrough innovation such that we could generate independent demand for access to LEO. The primary value of CASIS has always been in the allocation of the Congressionally-mandated 50% of all available ISS resources for research, not its relatively meager budget for grants. Every Fortune 500 company I met with when I worked at CASIS understood this and saw the ISSNL as a way to conduct heavily-subsidized science that they wouldn’t otherwise get to do. Just like the terrestrial labs. The mission of driving entrepreneurial innovation and commercialization is a separate economic development function that has always taken a back seat to a continued focus on basic science, even when grant funding from programs like In-Space Production peaked. In my opinion, it is a travesty that these activities have never been funded or supported to the same level as basic science and future destinations. With the pending transition to the commercial Low Earth Orbit era, we have a chance to convince policymakers to do this differently. Early stage support for entrepreneurship and product development must be considered independently of basic science, perhaps even in entirely separate organizations. Perhaps even outside of NASA.

Great to partner with Starburst Aerospace for the panel at International Paris Air Show Aviation: Decarbonization is finally taking center stage. There have been many promises and updates on the progress of electric propulsion (hydrogen + batteries), particularly at the regional level in France; however, these forward-thinking plans have to fully materialize given the ambitious timeline and current maturity of the technology (i.e., with regards to hydrogen storage). The potential of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) has increased exponentially, but SAFs alone will not be enough to meet the 1.5°C CO2 reduction target, given current and projected production capacity. The roundtable discussion, hosted by Lukas Oberfhofer (Managing Director of Starburst Germany), focused on new mobility trends by 2030-2050.
