Applying for PhD in USA as an International grad is Tantamount to conquering Mars by Elon Musk. Embarking on the journey towards a PhD in the USA is a transformative odyssey, marked by significant milestones and challenges. It begins with that pivotal first internship, where the seeds of passion and curiosity are sown. From there, navigating through the final project of graduation becomes a defining moment, a culmination of years of dedication and hard work. After that, publishing research papers becomes a pressing thing to do even to move an inch further, that adds even more depth to this academic voyage. And much before that, consistently earning A's in all subjects is equally mandatory to pursuit this daunting voyage. Even after all these, this path is not without its trials. It involves writing countless emails to professors, facing numerous rejections, and mustering the patience to persevere until that one crucial 'yes' echoes through the inbox. It's a journey that demands resilience, determination, and unwavering faith in the pursuit of knowledge. On top of these academic endeavors, there's the formidable GRE Test, a rigorous assessment akin to a mini-PhD journey in itself. Mastering reading comprehension to the level of author of Game of Thrones, deciphering convoluted text completions, and unraveling recondite passages are all part of this arduous process. But even as the challenges seem daunting, we're reminded that this journey is far from over. It's akin to navigating through hell and emerging stronger, more resilient, and ever more determined. Yet, amidst the hardships, there's a beacon of hope—a video that offers insights and guidance to make this journey a bit more manageable. Watch it, share it with fellow travelers on this path, and remember, every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Here's to wishing you all the best on your PhD journey—may it be enriching, enlightening, and ultimately, deeply fulfilling. #PhD #PhDinUSA #USA #studyinUSA #USA #f1visa #unitedstates #masters #msinusa #india #newyorkcity

Alicia F V R, Year 12 Why Tanglin is Special to Me: Dynamic, Driven, Diverse "I was born in Hong Kong and joined Tanglin in late November 2021. My favourite subjects in school are HL Physics and Film. I love physics because it allows me to understand how the world around me works. Fashion is another passion of mine. This led me to email Natasha – one of the speakers from Vogue who recently gave a talk on disruption and innovation in the fashion industry at The Institute. I had no expectations, but I was hoping they’d allow me to help at their Next in Vogue event. To my great surprise, I was offered an internship and obviously, it was too good an opportunity to pass up! As an ardent self-starter, I have many diverse pursuits. I attended summer schools at Phillips Exeter and Imperials Global Summer School to delve into quantum physics, relativity, and astrophysics as well as gain valuable lab work experience. I’m also collaborating with NUS’s QuTalent team to produce videos on quantum physics. When I was younger, I started various donut/snack businesses in school. Although they didn’t pan out, it instilled an entrepreneurial spirit in me. I was a student council member too, helping to organise school socials, charity weeks, yearbooks etc. I joined various clubs where I learned public speaking skills that allowed me to win “Best Presenter” at Tanglin’s Hackathon as well as first place at the Bangkok world scholars cup global round. Pursuing such activities not only keeps me busy, they also allow me to build a competitive portfolio for future university applications. One teacher who left a big impact on me is Mr Jones, my physics teacher during IGCSE, who also ran the Advanced Physics Society. I remember the first mind-blowing session when we discussed general relativity, and it still leaves me with questions. Mr Jones’s passion for physics is just so infectious and you can’t help but feel inspired. Although I aim to pursue a physics degree in university, I’m not too sure what I want to do when I’m older. Maybe in physics, maybe in fashion, I’ll just see where the world takes me!" #PeopleOfTanglin #GenerationsOfExcellence

𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟. 𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟. Worried about not getting a PhD because you're not from a top college? Or because your IIT friend didn’t get in? Relax! You’re unique, and so is your application. Sell your strengths in your SOP and interviews, show your curiosity, and go for it! 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐍𝐨 "𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐋𝐚𝐛". Not all Ivy League labs are great for every field. Find the research that excites you. I ditched three Ivy League offers for UCSF because it was a better fit. Your PhD journey is uniquely yours, so don't let societal judgments cloud your path. 𝐏𝐫𝐨 𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬: 1. 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐚 𝐏𝐡𝐃: It’s a tough journey, so prepare yourself. 2. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬: It’s about specialized training, not the best country or university. 3. 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐏𝐈: Check out papers, stalk authors on social media, and talk to current/former lab members. 4. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲: Finding the right PI takes time. 5. 🎓📚 Why I'm Not Ready for Summer Holidays 🌞🏖️ As my colleagues pack their bags for well-deserved breaks, I find myself in a peculiar position: I'm not quite ready to hit pause on the academic year. Here's why: **The thrill of discovery:** Just before summer, we submitted a long-term project. Writing it up is always a home stretch, but the feeling of submission is unmatched. Another project won't be ready before my holiday, but finalizing the data analysis and discussing the storyline are equally rewarding tasks. **Mentorship:** Working with PhD candidates is incredibly rewarding. With most on holiday, the last week has been quiet, and I can't stress enough how much I miss these interactions. **Campus life:** There is something special about a university campus in summer, especially the SBE Tapijnkazerne campus. In the first week of July, the campus changed from vibrant echoes of students nervous before their master thesis defense, or relieved right afterward, to complete quiet. **Lifelong learning:** In academia, we're students as much as we are teachers. I've just started exploring BCIs and I amhooked! **Community Impact:** The DEXLab and our immersive research are gaining traction. The potential for real-world change in the Euregio is energizing – more to come after the summer! Don't get me wrong – I value holidays and time at the beach (or wherever). But right now, my work does not feel like work. It feels like I'm getting paid to solve the world's most interesting puzzles while looking forward to interacting with colleagues again. #AcademicLife #PhD #Research #Mentorship #UniversityLife #SummerInTheLab

#Pressure is #privilege. No matter how difficult it may seem in the moment, there’s always a reason why life presented this obstacle to you in this way. A challenge is meant to change you not break you. Never take for granted any challenge you are presented. Enjoy the journey as best as you can because it won't last forever. Nothing is worse than being comfortable. Someone is working towards the exact same challenge you want to now hand off. Take it as an opportunity to uncover your true potential not an annoying hurdle. Pain, mistakes, and failure cannot be avoided and are not the opposite of success. You are never alone in your battles. We are all dealing with something. Whatever life has presented to you, acknowledge what you can control and realize you can either avoid or tackle it with a simpler outlook. Sacrifice brings greatness.
