Ben Stiller. "Dodgeball". Employment Skills. I'm sorry, what? When I looked up "United Nations employment skills for the future" just a few minutes ago, I DID NOT expect to be witnessing Ben Stiller in a "Dodgeball" .gif, repeating "Let me HIT you with some knowledge" ad infinitum. But that's the world we live in, folks: where pop culture, digital humour, the United Nations, and developing skills in youth interface. Know what's underneath all of that, though?? The recognition that to reach your audience, as a skilled communicator, you must KNOW your audience. It's not about YOU (as the speaker): it's about THEM (as the receiver). It's also where our humanity can (and must) continue to 'interface' with the continuously-emerging technologies. Oh, and by the way: communication skills (whether you can them 'interpersonal skills' or 'collaboration skills' or 'leadership skills', etc.) are STILL in the top spots across many measures. One of the key competences usually fostered in business is influencing others to advocate for one’s goals. 🔊 However, as one grows in the organization and faces more complex challenges, inquiring becomes key: with change being “the new black” nobody can afford to be stuck in their own mental models. As Peter M. Senge says, finding the right balance between advocacy and inquiry is a healthy habit. Good news is it can be trained. ⚖ Some tips to start are: 📌 Challenging yourself to distinguish facts from assumptions: say more “this is the way I see things” rather than “this is the way things are”. 📌 Asking others to interpret a given set of data, despite you having your own reading. 📌 Genuinely inquiring into how others arrived at their point of view and wondering how this can reshape your own thinking. 📌 Asking them what test or experiment could make them change their mind, and which test or experiment could make you change yours!
