One thing I have discovered as a specialist facilitator is that reading is personal to everyone. There are very often different levels of confidence for people especially when it comes to reading allowed based on the previous experience individuals have had with their reading. Most often for the people that come to me reading is a huge barrier for them. Often if they have had interventions in the past, the experience they have had has shaped their attitude and confidence for the present day. For many, sadly, that experience has been anything but helpful and conducive to helping people advance with their reading and often having the opposing effect. Reading is entrenched in our society and life can be very difficult if you are unable to read effectively. Attempting to wrap up my book readings for the year, so I can begin/add my next selection of books. I just read this sentence, which TELLS us how critical it is that we identify and support students with dyslexia EARLY. “Early detection of dyslexia and early intervention usually alleviate and prevent emotional problems such as anxiety that make reading and schoolwork even more difficult.”-Basic Facts about Dyslexia & Other Reading Problems, p. 77. This was knowledge that I did NOT have as a classroom teacher. My lack of knowledge resulted in me having to WATCH as I most likely caused MORE anxiety for students whose challenges I couldn’t understand or better support inside my classroom. I no longer blame myself because I now know better. I also realize that there is STILL so much more work to be done so that we avoid causing more trauma and anxiety for children who struggle to learn to read. As we roll into the New Year, my hope is that there is more INTENTION to get this information and knowledge into the hands of teachers AND decision-makers so that students don’t continue to walk the lonely road of reading struggle. #designed2teach #WEOWETHEMBETTER #teachthemtoread #IamTENACIOUS
