Does Tata ‘own’ Jamshedpur? 🌻 Hey Readers!🌻 Today we will dive into an interesting story! 1. Background and Tata's Dream: 👉 In 1908, Tatas aimed to establish India's largest steel companies. 👉 Geologist identified Sakchi as an ideal location due to coal, iron ore, proximity to a railway line, and Calcutta port. 2. Challenges of Sakchi: 👉 Sakchi was a village lacking city amenities, proper roads, waste disposal, and reputed hospitals. 👉 Attracting workers and management was a challenge. 3. Tata's Unconventional Solution: 👉 Tata decided to build a complete town in Sakchi. 👉 Leased land, established Tata Town Services for infrastructure needs. Built schools, Tata Main Hospital, parks, and sports infrastructure. 4. Sakchi becomes Jamshedpur: 👉 During World War I, Tata supplied crucial steel to the British Empire. 👉 As a gesture of gratitude, the British renamed Sakchi to Jamshedpur after Tata's founder, Jamsetji. 5. Tata's Dominance in Jamshedpur: 👉 For a century, Tata controlled Jamshedpur without a municipal corporation. 👉 It was a 'company town' with Tata managing all aspects. 6. PIL Against Tata: 👉 In 2018, a PIL challenged Tata's control. 👉Development was uneven, focusing on core areas, neglecting outsiders. 7. Dilemma and Proposed Solution: 👉Jharkhand government considered handing over governing rights to a local body. 👉Tatas opposed, citing their century-long commitment and trust associated with the Tata name. 8. Alternative Arrangement - Industrial Town: 👉Proposed an 'industrial town' status under a special provision in the Indian Constitution. 👉Municipal council with Tata representatives, government nominees, and local residents for a balanced approach. 👉A democratic solution to address concerns about Tata's control and ensure local voices are heard. 9. Does TATA ‘own’ Jamshedpur? In 1908, the Tatas wanted to set up India’s biggest steel companies. And they decided that the ambitious dream would take place in a small village called Sakchi. Now, Sakchi was the perfect choice— coal to the north, iron ore to the south, and a railway line & the port city of Calcutta nearby. The only problem? No big city amenities. Without proper roads, waste disposal systems, hospitals and schools, workers & management would never move there. So Tata decided to do something outrageous— Build a full-fledged town in Sakchi! They set up the Tata Town Services & started building the infrastructure.  Basically, Tata did everything a local government would do. And Sakchi became India’s first ‘planned’ city. But wait…how does Jamshedpur fit into this? Well, a global war. You see, during World War I, Tata supplied a lot of steel at cheap rates to the British Empire. So as a ‘thank you’, the British  renamed the town after Jamsetji, Tata’s founder. And Sakchi became Jamshedpur. For a century, Tata ran the show in the ‘company town’. Jamshedpur was the only city with 1 million+ population that functioned without a municipal corporation. But things changed in 2018. Some folks filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against Tata. Why? Because Tata didn’t seem to care about the ‘outsiders’ of Jamshedpur. So, the Jharkhand government decided to set up a municipal corporation and hand over the governing rights to them. But the Tatas weren’t happy. They didn’t want to cede control. So, the alternative? Declaring Jamshedpur an ‘industrial town’. See, under a special provision, Tata will be able to run the city. But it’ll be more democratic. There will be a municipal council that will include folks from Tata, government nominees & locals. The Chairman of TATA Steel was holding a weekly meeting with Tata Steel staff in Jamshedpur. A worker took up a serious issue. He said the quality and hygiene of toilets for the workers was very bad. Whereas, he pointed that the cleaniness and the hygiene of executive toilets was always very good. The Chairman asked his top executive how much time he needs to set it right. The executive asked for a month to set it right. Chairman said "I would rather do it in a day. *Send me A Carpenter."* Next day, when the carpenter came, *he just ordered the sign boards to be swapped*. The sign board on the *Workers’ Toilet* displayed *"Executives"* And the *Executives’ Toilet* displayed *"Workers”.* Chairman then instructed *this sign to be changed every fortnight.* The quality of both the toilets came at par in the next three days. *"Leadership" is something much more than being an Executive** Moral : *_Problem identification requires critical thinking_* *_"But solving a Problem just requires creative thinking_* *_This is not a story.. but A True Incident._* Once in an interview, the interviewer asked Ratan Tata how are you compared with Dhirubhai. Ratan Tata said Dhirubhai is businessman , I am an Industrialist. When Ratan Tata used to come to Pune plant of Tata Motors, sometimes, he used to have lunch at staff canteen along with all cadres. Tai mahal hotel attack, entire one year salary was paid to the staff till the time Tai was restored and also the salary of the staff who were killed by Kasab and gang, their family gets all salaries every month. Jamshedpur to be Run by Tata - Good Move or Bad Precedent? Tata taking over the administration of Jamshedpur makes sense - they built this city and know how to run it. Perhaps corporate governance can boost efficiency further. 💼 Tata Steel has shaped the city's economy, infrastructure, and public services for over a century. This new development would make that influence official. But India's first privatized city also means handing civic decisions over to a company, not public representatives. Profits may be prioritized over people. 🤑 This could inspire other companies to vie for their own exclusively privatized cities as well. Ambani City? Adani Nagar? 🏙️ Jamshedpur would serve as a test case for comparing government and corporate control of cities. One hopes that success here leads to more public-private partnerships rather than further privatization bids. Although inefficient, Indian cities should remain democratic spaces, not commodities for purchase by the highest corporate bidder. There are good reasons India traditionally keeps city management public.
