How we can detect if a planet or moon has the potential to harbour life? The NSO - Netherlands Space Office as awarded funding to the "Netherlands Planetary Science Network on Observables of Planetary Habitability". A new network of researcher aims to find out the best strategies during the next five years via three dedicated postdoctoral research projects and build a community on this focus area. In planetary science ‘habitability’ (the potential of a planet or a moon to allow for life to emerge and thrive) is a key focus area for future missions to rocky bodies and icy moons in the solar system. However, it is not yet sufficiently clear which features unequivocally inform us about habitable conditions. The funded expertise network will bring together expertise and facilities in the Netherlands to develop new concepts and research strategies to recognize habitability on the basis of interior characteristics, landforms and the surface composition of rocky planets and icy moons. In this way, the network can prepare for data use from future missions, contribute internationally to the design and use of new instruments, and build bridges to exoplanetary research. Late 2022 the Netherlands Platform for Planetary Science took the initiative to bring together a community of researchers and other stakeholders. Many have contributed their ideas and expertise to formulate the framework of the now funded Expertise Network. The team leading the network consists of PI Wim van Westrenen (VU Amsterdam), co-PI Inge Loes ten Kate (Utrecht University/UvA) and co-PI Sebastiaan de Vet (TU Delft, and chair of NPP). Three postdoctoral research projects will be led and hosted by co-I Wouter van der Wal (TU Delft), co-I Tjalling de Haas (Utrecht University) and co-I Frank van Ruitenbeek (University of Twente). While there isn't a single, definitive map showing the "interconnectedness" of all groundwater globally, several resources offer valuable insights into the extent and complexity of these networks. Transboundary Aquifers of the World map by the International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre (IGRAC) depicts transboundary aquifers that extend across international borders. It highlights the extensive presence of these shared resources, raising awareness of their management and governance complexities. Global Groundwater Information System (GGIS) interactive platform offered by IGRAC provides access to various datasets and maps related to groundwater, including aquifer characteristics, vulnerability and recharge rates. While not directly showing connections it allows exploration of different aquifers and their potential interactions. GRACE-FO Groundwater Depletion Map from NASA's GRACE-FO mission displays changes in groundwater storage trends for Earth's major aquifers. While not an interconnection map it helps visualise areas experiencing over-extraction potentially indicating connections due to shared pressure or depletion. World Water Development annual report by UNESCO provides comprehensive assessments of global water resources including groundwater. While not offering a dedicated interconnection map, specific chapters often discuss transboundary aquifers and regional interconnectedness challenges. Remember, groundwater interactions are complex and influenced by various factors. Depth: Connections are more prominent in shallower aquifers compared to deeper ones. Geology: Rock permeability and structure greatly impact water flow and connectivity. Human activity Over-extraction and pollution can disrupt natural flow patterns. A recent NASA-led study published in Nature Geoscience offers a game-changer for understanding Earth's river systems. For the first time, we have a global accounting of river storage and discharge variations. This translates to critical insights for sustainable water resource management: Quantified River Volume: The study estimates the average global river volume between 1980 and 2009, providing a crucial baseline for future comparisons. Human Water Use: The research identifies regions experiencing water stress through "negative discharge" zones, areas where less water flows out of a river segment than enters. This information is invaluable for prioritizing water management efforts. Consistent Methodology: The study employs a standardized approach, enabling comparisons of flow rates and human water use across diverse geographical areas. This empowers data-driven decision-making for water resource allocation. This research, coupled with future data from specialized satellites, has the potential to revolutionize river management strategies. We are proud to announce the official launch of the Canadian Hydrospatial Network (CHN)! The CHN, developed by the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation, is more than just a geospatial data product — it's a game-changer. The first dataset released covers the Miramichi watershed in New Brunswick and showcases the CHN's ability to provide high-quality, detailed data. Two additional areas have also been released, for a total of 18,900km2 covered. 📊 Analysis-ready: Incorporating full network-traversing capabilities, catchments, value-added attributes such as stream order and more. 🔍 Enhanced features: Improved accuracy, resolution and elevation alignment where available compared with its predecessor, the National Hydrographic Network. 🤝 A collaborative effort: Developed in collaboration with provinces, territories, federal departments, the United States Geological Survey and academia.
