You'll have to excuse my gratitude post: Almost 3 years ago, I started working for H. E. Williams, Inc. I was given the opportunity to work on a little trucking project called Williams Logistics, Inc. In 2020, we had outdated equipment, processes, and partnerships. The company quickly dwindled from 6 to 2 employees. I struggled with driver turnover and recruitment. Since then, we have accomplished the following: 1. Amassed an office team with over 70 years of combined industry experience. 2. Hired some of the best drivers in the industry, many of whom are million+ milers. 3. Built relationships with core customers and brokers in the industry. 4. Decreased our deadhead percentage by 40%. 5. Increased our revenue by 46%. 6. Saved thousands of dollars through partnerships with fuel and maintenance vendors. 7. Increased the size of the fleet to 15 trucks and 30 trailers. None of this would have been possible without the support of folks with more experience and knowledge than me. Margins are always tight for transportation as such it makes sense for sharing of titles! Several major trucking companies have split their president and CEO jobs, handing the responsibilities to separate executives, rather than to one top official, as many businesses in trucking and other industries do. Werner Enterprises, Prime Global Trucking Inc. and Estes Express Lines are among a number of carriers that have separated the roles by promoting presidents from within — while keeping their CEOs in the top job. The reasoning behind such a move usually varies by the company. But two trucking executives who have held both job titles shared their insights with Trucking Dive on the demands of each role.

The recent move by five auto haulers to combine forces and create a publicly traded trucking company is a perfect example of collaboration in action. While competition is often the focus in business, this initiative highlights how joining resources can elevate everyone involved. I've seen similar dynamics in my own work environment, where partnerships can open new doors that competitors alone might struggle to. This strategic alliance not only aims to streamline operations but also seeks to tackle challenges like driver shortages and efficiency improvements. The takeaway here is clear: sometimes, coming together is the best way to progress. As I walk through the Charlotte airport to catch yet another flight, I can’t help but to reflect on the journey with Roadrunner since 2020, a time when challenges seemed insurmountable. Taking the reins amidst the worst financial performance of any logistics businesses I’ve ever run (of which there were 7 and all required some degree of TLC, to say it lightly), legal battles, disgraced former executives, facing consequences of disastrous prior decisions, I embraced the role of Executive Chairman and later CEO. We went hard to work. We knew the it would take everything we got to pull it off and it would take time. Today, we proudly stand together with the wonderful people who worked tirelessly over the last few years at the helm of a restructured, financially viable and successful company. All amidst one of the tougher freight recessions on record. The spirit of perseverance, commitment to a vision, and the courage to step up for the greater good fueled our transformation. This journey underscores the importance of humility, assertiveness, and the selfless pursuit of a brighter future for all. None of that would have happened without our amazing partner-customers.
