How did India become a land where agriculture was the most preferred profession 200 years ago to the profession where 10,881 Indian farmers died by suicide in 2021?
With the onset of industrialization, Indian farmers were incentivized to leave their farming practices of having multiple sources of income from the same farm to produce crops at scale.
Earlier an Indian farm used to have multiple sources of income from
1. Dairy
2. Vegetables
3. Fruits
4. Poultry
5. Grains
Shashi Kumar, Founder of Akshayakalpa at the age of six, received advice from his father, a farmer, to not pursue farming. He followed the advice and spent 15 years working for IT services companies like WIPRO in the US. However, he eventually returned to India with a unique mission: transforming farming from a single source of income to six diverse sources.
Traditionally, agriculture involves growing a single crop at scale throughout the year, exposing farmers to numerous variables such as rain, soil conditions, weather, water availability, and seed quality.
To reduce dependence on crop cultivation Shashi Kumar opened multiple sources of income for farmers. Akshayakalpa chose one farm in each village to work with and has now scaled beyond 150 farms.
The average farmer who works with Akshayakalpa Organic earns Rs 1,00,000 ($1,200) per month
