In 1991 I travelled to the UK on my Big OE. I learned to survive on my own in London without my parents bailing me out financially (my budgeting skills then were crap) and without having them as a constant sounding board (timezone was inconvenient and there was no internet!!) In 1994 I returned home and started my business to send kiwis overseas to experience the same life changing experiences I had. In our world today, cultural exchange is more crucial than ever. It allows us to step out of our comfort zones and see life from different perspectives. This helps us grow as individuals, challenge our assumptions, and develop a deeper empathy and understanding for others. It’s amazing how much mutual respect and connection can be fostered through these experiences. When we immerse ourselves in different cultures, we don’t just learn about new ways of thinking and problem-solving; we enhance our skills, enrich our knowledge, and become more adaptable and innovative. Plus, the friendships and professional networks formed during these exchanges often last a lifetime, opening doors to new opportunities and collaborations. Living in a new country and adapting to a different culture also pushes us to grow personally. We become more resilient, self-aware, and open-minded. These experiences shape us in profound ways. My summer job was the best. Patrolling the land and waters of the National Capital Commission - Commission de la capitale nationale. By foot, bike, truck or boat, whether in the summer or the winter, it was my duty to ensure our region's natural parks were respected and conserved, and that everyone could enjoy them safely. While I didn't hold any real authority, every day presented a new opportunity to develop my skills. → 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀-𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 On my first day of work, I noticed a man crouched over from his car, when I went to check on him, he was showing signs of having a heart attack. Remembering my first-aid training, I asked him to get in safe position, while immediately calling for an ambulance. He was saved. → 𝗗𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗰𝘆 International conflict arose in the BBQ area, where two large families, of two distinct cultures complained about each other. I brought together the two leaders of the groups and came to a compromise where one would turn down their music a tad, and the other would share one of the tables they were holding up. A global dispute was avoided and many smiles were found. → 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 Being a parking-lot attendant can be boring, especially on a rainy day. As the team's supervisor, I'd drive from one location to another to relieve my colleague of their duties for a few minutes while they competed on a brain-teaser game, to see how they measured against their colleagues. When we got together, it was always a source of fun. It was also during those slow days that I learn to connect with each of them, allowing us to be more efficient as a team, as they were enabled to operate with more autonomy on sunny [and busy] days. This year, I had the long-awaited opportunity to attend the #HIMSS conference in Orlando, Florida – a milestone I've eagerly awaited since joining the sales team. However, instead of diving into the whirlwind of networking and industry insights, I made a deliberate choice to spend the week with my family and close friends in Orlando. Amidst the bustling conference halls and networking opportunities, I realized something profound: sometimes, the most valuable connections aren't made in boardrooms or at industry events, but around the dinner table and during moments of shared laughter with loved ones. Choosing to prioritize family over professional endeavors for a week may seem unconventional, but for me, it was a decision rooted in my core values. As much as I value professional growth and networking opportunities, I firmly believe that family comes first. Spending quality time with my daughter and creating cherished memories with loved ones reminded me of what truly matters in life. It's essential to be dedicated to our work, but it's equally important – if not more so – to nurture our relationships and create meaningful experiences with those we hold dear. This experience reaffirmed my commitment to balancing work and family life and setting an example for my daughter. I want her to understand that while ambition and dedication are admirable traits, they should never come at the expense of cherished moments with family. As I return from this rejuvenating week, I feel grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with what truly matters and reaffirm my priorities.
