Without my new boss, former "employee of the month" at BestBuy, I'd be a real-life Grinch if I didn't make these changes... Getting started with internet businesses was rough It felt like nothing would ever take off I'd have this "insanely amazing" idea. Get excited for the first few days. And that voice would creep up again, "you failed before, you'll fail again." My professional bucket wasn't getting filled with how I was spending my time I was peeved! Here's how I changed a few things and saw my luck 10x with it: 1) Apprentice-first approach I said, "maybe I need to learn from someone that's way ahead" I love being on a team because I receive quick feedback What would my life be like if I had a career that was similar? 2) Don't listen to what they say I used to say "just talk to people. network." Bad advice. Most people don't share the ugly truth about their day-to-day. In my previous roles, I'd stalk my executives' calendars, and ask: "Would I enjoy this schedule?" 3) Think in pods I expected to work on strategic projects, and zoom back in the day-to-day on a regular basis at every company I was hired at. I was naive. So I used side projects, and building something on the side to fill that void. But doing it alone bored me. I'd rather have someone a Slack message away than browse YouTube and subreddits to figure out what to do. And while, the method may work, it takes time That's my next point 4) Decades, not weeks 4 years is not a long time. So I asked myself, "can I see myself doing this for at least 4 NFL Seasons? No? Skip." 5) Using mental reframes When I was young, my parents always said, "If you put half the effort in math as you did with tennis, we wouldn't be having this conversation." I like tennis and teamwork; early practice? cool. match tomorrow? nice. How could I structure my professional life to incorporate the things that I love in my hobbies? Four months ago, I courageously embraced a new chapter of my career journey at Red Ventures by applying to join the Email team at The Points Guy. Eager to conquer fresh challenges and expand my skill set beyond the realms of financial planning and revenue operations—areas I honed expertise in during my tenure at CNET—this transition marked a pivotal moment for me. Venturing into the intricate world of full-funnel marketing was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking, yet deep down, I knew it was time for a transformative shift. Blessed with unwavering support from my exceptional manager, invaluable guidance from mentors, and an uplifting network of peers rooting for my success, I embarked on this exciting path with confidence. Today, I celebrate a significant milestone—three fulfilling months with the TPG Email team. Gratitude fills my heart as I reflect on the enriching experiences and the talented professionals I've had the privilege to collaborate with. Surrounded by individuals who embody wisdom and a relentless pursuit of growth, I've delved into the realms of content, strategy, travel and…yup, you guessed it: credit cards (points + miles newcomer here)! All this alongside creative writers, engineers, and data virtuosos. This journey underscores a fundamental truth: life's most rewarding moments lie beyond our comfort zones. Embracing change and welcoming new opportunities, even amidst uncertainties, propels us towards personal and professional growth. It's never too late to pivot, to reinvent yourself, and chase your aspirations. I recall the puzzled looks when I shared my ambition of merging industrial engineering with marketing in college. Today, standing here, I am elated to have realized that dream. I am living the career I envisioned during my college days, a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and embracing change.

This is a fascinating conversation about personal and professional goals. I can relate to this concept of a "post-achievement" lifestyle in theory. Not from the perspective that I've piled up massive amounts of money because I haven't, but more around the idea that my priorities have changed after grinding my ass off for 20 years to go from intern to EVP. These new priorities have led me to reevaluate how I view work. This doesn't mean I'm not determined or don't work hard; I am and do. I love to work; that was always my problem. The difference for me now is that I'm motivated by new desired outcomes. For many years, it was new titles and responsibilities. Now, it's more flexibility—flexibility to try new things and explore more personal pursuits. Satisfaction for me is how I can make others feel. F*** hustle culture. “To me, that’s nirvana because I still want to do hard things and work on fun projects,” he says. “But I also want that to be only one part of my life—and not the biggest part of my life anymore.” https://lnkd.in/ejw5zdEU

I remember being anxious and confused about my career ! 9 years ago I was living in New York state. . . And I was wondering, “What am I going to do with my life?” I moved to New York to be part of a special training and volunteer program (think on-the-job training). It was my first time away from home. I felt independent. I felt important. I was working with people from all around the world 🌎 ! ! ! But I didn’t LOVE it! Many of my peers around me loved it. But not me. It just wasn’t my cup of tea. I didn’t feel like I was a real culture-fit. I was from a fast-paced city with really interesting people. And in that part of New York state, I felt like my peers were…. Well… Boring. And the work?? For me the work was boring, repetitive, and uninspiring. The education & training was TOP NOTCH and unbelievable; stupendous. Beyond compare. But it wasn’t enough to allay my other concerns. I fully immersed myself in the program. I attended classes, lectures, went to work everyday, etc. So even though I was struggling with not getting every thing I wanted out of the program, I fully adapted myself and started to somewhat enjoy all it had to offer. Then one day they told me that I would not be extended. And I was shattered. 💔 I worked so hard, adapted so well, and went above and beyond…. And then they wanted to let me go? Why? But the real question is… Why was I SHATTERED? Why did I feel broken? 🤔 🚫 Being in that program in New York is all that I had planned for! I didn’t plan for anything else! 🚫 I had no real strategy moving forward. I felt lost and confused. (And a little betrayed to be honest.) But I sat down and I started planning. And once I realized these things: ⓵ What I needed to improve on ⓶ What I wanted to do next ⓷ What I wanted to do in the longterm  ⓸ What to prioritize to get all that done I felt much better. Just a few weeks ago as a businessman, I felt overwhelmed about What’s Next for Me. But guess what I did? 💡Followed steps 1 through 4 And I felt much better. If you’re felling stressed, anxious, or confused about your career then you then make be because (1) you’re not strategizing, (2) you’re strategizing the WRON WAY, or (3) you’re not sticking to your strategy. It's been a whirlwind of learning, growth, and incredible experiences. 🎉 I've had the opportunity to delve into the realm of business intelligence and data analysis, creating visualisations that have made an impact across various teams. The journey has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride, filled with exciting twists and turns. 🎢 📈 📊 The onboarding process at CS DISCO deserves a special mention. From a smooth interview process to an energetic and inspiring Camp Disco( Our Onboarding process) , every step was meticulously planned and executed. A well-structured onboarding process can be a game-changer, instilling confidence in the company right from the get-go. And CS DISCO nailed it! ⚡ I'm also thankful to Rahul Gupta, Stephanie Carsten, and Charu Nath for ensuring a smooth onboarding process. Rahul Gupta deserves a special mention for his excellent communication during my interview process and for patiently answering all my queries about the company. 🙏 Stephanie Carsten, leading the great Camp Disco (our onboarding process), answered all my questions about the company, its culture, and the products we use. This made me confident and excited to be part of the company. The entire onboarding process, right from my interview to Camp Disco, was inspiring and energetic. ⚡ Now, let's talk about something that's often underrated - having a great manager. But guess what? I didn't just get one great manager, I got two! It's like hitting the managerial lottery! 🎰 A huge shoutout to my managers, Jugal K. and William S.. They may be two, but they're united in their goal - to empower and foster growth in my career. Their unique approaches to nurturing growth have given me the freedom to carve my own path. Their open communication, honest feedback, and work ethics are truly inspiring. 🚀 📈 Lastly, I'm deeply grateful to my wonderful friends and family( including my Linkedin Family) who supported me during this transition, and my Disco family in India, US, and UK for creating such a fantastic work culture. Every new hire at any of my companies grabs me in the first week with the same question: What the hell is DFS? I keep hearing everyone say it. It’s a tool my coach taught me that allowed my teams and I to go faster and more focused. Here’s what it is and how to use it: It stands for “Desired Future State” - it's sort of like vision but more detailed. A good DFS is: + Specific, it includes numbers, people, org charts, systems, even how things will feel + It's in the future (could be in 1 hour, 1 week, 1 month or 1 year+) + It's completely made up and divorced from current reality. + It is the “WHAT” unencumbered by the “HOW” + It's exciting and comes from a place of ambition and curiosity + It's a choice: not a should/must/have to, its something you want. + It’s a 10/10 (its not what you THINK you’ll have, its PERFECT) Now a lot of people may do this for their annual or quarterly planning. Here’s where we’re different: We attach a DFS to essentially EVERY project, initiative, or even meeting. At the start of a meeting, you’ll hear me ask: Whats the DFS by the end of this meeting? Or when someone wants my feedback on an initiative, I’ll always ask first: “Whats the DFS?” So what Jesse? What makes this so effective? As founders, we often have a very clear POV on what we want and where we are going… and so we falsely assume our employees (or even clients/vendors) have a clear sense of both 1) WHAT we want but also 2) WHAT they want/why they are doing what they are doing. The truth is most people get lost in the inertia of a business. What happened before they joined? Or what did they do last week? They get rooted in the past and fill their time with work. Much of which isn’t impactful or aligned to the bigger goals. When you start asking people: What’s your DFS for this? They will be startled. They won’t know at first, then stammer out a random answer. But with time, EVERY employee at all levels for all things gains CLARITY on WHAT they want/Why they are doing what they’re doing. Best of all: you aren’t TELLING them their DFS, so they have agency/ownership in their DFS. There are additional steps to this process I’ll save for another day but for now, ask your team (or even your client): What’s your DFS for this?

Embarking on a daring career shift entails navigating a path filled with challenges. In this second installment of a 5-part series with Dominic Dunnett, Senior Product Manager at Revolut, he candidly reveals the incremental steps he took before the plunge, and the hurdles he faced during his remarkable transition from law to software engineering. Shifting gears wasn't just a career change for Dominic—it also involved relocating from Scotland to Asia. “I had to accept taking a step backwards to start over. I was three years into law, which is equivalent to an intermediate-level lawyer pushing towards seniority. To get hired as a software engineer, I had to accept that I’d start over from the graduate level. Making a change in career and location at the same time was challenging, but a lot of the motivation came from the self-respect and satisfaction of having made this choice as my own. I remember one of my friends asking me, why are you doing this? Have you lost all interest in your corporate career? I did...and here's how I fixed that: ----- I dove into my job wanting to climb fast 🏃 Lemme tell you, corporate was good to me. It gave me: • Skills • Credibility • Financial cushion    But I also sacrificed my: • Potential • Health • Time ...thinking it was "for my family." Looked up at my bosses' lives 👔 It scared me: → Miserable   → Unhealthy → Expendable → Nowhere to go → Stuck at the top I thought working hard meant providing for my family.  But I was hurting them, missing:  • Birthdays • Beach fun • Baseball games    ...for "critical" meetings. Drained...doing busywork for faceless corporations.  Clock was ticking...FAST. "Is this it?" I craved freedom and impact. → But feared risk → Clung to the "safety" → My soul died at my desk I knew I had to break from the corporate grind. I'd never be excited padding someone else's pockets...or working a mission that wasn't mine 😣 To be happy, I needed to OWN something. To create and run something I cared about. Enough wasting away in a gilded cage.   So I took radical action: 1. Put Corporate on Autopilot   2. Radically Changed My Environment 3. Invested in Mentors 4. Clarified My Dream Life    5. Deciphered My Zone of Genius 6. Designed a Personal Category 7. Became a Content & Conversation Machine 8. Started a Simple Side Business   9. Experimented Forward     These 9 steps were instrumental. I then chose to leave corporate for good.
