Our Managing Partner Jamaludin Bujang recently participated as a panellist at the Tech in Asia Conference, joining Kevin Brockland, CFA from Indelible Ventures and Dave Ng from Altara Ventures, with Adlin Yusman from Endeavor Malaysia as the moderator. During the session, he mentioned that Gobi believed foreign VCs had invested as much as local VCs in Malaysian startups. Figures showed that the split was almost 50:50, out of the total US$1.3 billion invested in Malaysia over the past few years. He noted that foreign #VCs still invested in Malaysia despite not having local offices, indicating that the notion that startups couldn’t secure funding from foreign VCs was inaccurate. He believed that VCs do not need to establish offices in Malaysia for local startups to secure funding. The data indicated that the crucial factor was not the number of VCs but the funding source. To attract investors, startups should market themselves effectively and reach out to foreign VCs outside Malaysia. Essentially, they needed to be on par with or more attractive than other startups in the region. Gobi has invested in 45 #Malaysian #tech companies since 2015, totalling over US$70 million. If you had told me a year ago that I would one day be sharing the stage with Pak Tom Lembong, I would have thought you were mad! Pak Tom is Vice-Chairman of Nexticorn, former Indonesian Minister of Trade and Head of the Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board (now the Ministry of Investment). He is, quite simply, one of Indonesia's most prominent investors and policy thought-leaders. He is certainly one of the most astute thinkers I have had the pleasure of meeting in my time in Indonesia, and I have been a fan of his for many years (although I compete these days with his 570k Instagram followers!) I don't do post very often, but when I do.. Is when I realized too many bad perceptions among the ecosystem players with other stakeholders. I have the pleasure of being featured in a panel with Pak Mahpud Sujai from Badan Kebijakan Fiskal from Kemenkeu and Prof Atien a (very) senior researcher from BRIN. Our audience is a cluster of promising startups that Greentech Entrepreneur Network, a joint effort by GIZ Indonesia & ASEAN and Endeavor Indonesia The constant streaming questions and response are coming from the place of us vs. your perspectives. I am not claiming I am one such non-biased person in the room, but if there's only one thing from my years in building Supernova Ecosystem had taught me is that nobody wants to be an antagonists in anybody's book. When we say entrepreneurs doing product-market-fit, the policy-makers also doing the same thing. We are all in this same boat of 'figuring things out'. We do realize regulators have this duty to protect the interests of society, which in Indonesia, are very far wide and in-betweens. We need to see compromise among the speed of innovations (which we are desperately needs) with the safety and well-being of the people. The unregulated innovations can be a two-edge sword if not regulated appropriately. There's enough news out there to prove this, where this make the whole ecosystem looks bad. Is Indonesia's tech scene in trouble? With 280mn people (250m Muslim) and 13 tech unicorns (firms valued at $1bn+), it is the prize market in Southeast Asia. What's it like in your region/ country? What's it like for tech startups and the VC world there? Excerpts from a recent article below (link in comments): “Indonesia’s technology sector has just entered a consolidation phase, marked by the decline in the number of players because many did not survive due to competition... After this phase is over, the surviving ones are set to enjoy huge profits,” Mr Wijayanto, who was an economic adviser to Indonesia’s former vice-president Jusuf Kalla, told The Straits Times. “The surviving companies must do efficiency drives, cut operating costs, end cash burning,” Mr Wijayanto stressed. “Investors are now less concerned about companies’ valuation and more concerned about profitability.”  “The prize of winning the Indonesia market is so big. They (foreign tech companies) are making Indonesia the last battleground in South-east Asia and using the ammunition they have collected elsewhere to rule the Indonesia market,” said Mr Henry. Jakarta-based East Ventures, one of Indonesia’s leading venture capital firms, told ST in an e-mail reply that the country’s digital sector is entering a new cycle, after start-up valuations rose and reached their peak between 2020 and 2021.  “In 2022 to 2023, we entered a new phase... the entire technology ecosystem globally is facing pressure,” it added. “Investors are becoming increasingly careful in providing funding. KL20 was quite the summit! Super exciting things about to happen in #malaysia. The Prime Minister and Minister of Ecomomy’s messages were clear - it is now the time for Malaysia to become a startup hub and provide the breeding ground for entrepreneurs to drive new industries and ecosystems in Malaysia. Their new policies and incentives are both promising and progressive. It was also great to see many senior figures, like the CEO of Khazanah Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir, champion the potential of Malaysian agritech startups to create sustainable impact and point out that it’s not just about semiconductors. Many thanks to Hian Goh for echoing these sentiments and his shout outs on Nutrition Technologies and how we are best positioned to drive the insect agriculture ecosystem in #malaysia. Is #Malaysia the next big thing in tech? Lots of takeaways after the first day of Tech in Asia’s KL conference: 1. In many ways, Malaysia’s #technology and #VentureCapital ecosystem reminds me of #Indonesia’s a decade ago - lots of excitement, plenty of parties, but not many deals. 2. In fact, Malaysia trails the pack in VC funding. According to Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company, the country accounts for only 1.3% of all VC equity funding and 6.3% of all VC equity deals in #SoutheastAsia. 3. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Having limited access to institutional funding meant that Malaysian entrepreneurs have historically built businesses that are profitable and sustainable, instead of pursuing “growth at all cost” by burning VC dollars. 4. Furthermore, Malaysia’s GDP per capita is USD 12k, approximately 3x that of Indonesia’s, #Vietnam’s, and the #Philippines’. This means that Malaysian #startups enjoy better unit economics than their regional peers while operating in a relatively low-cost environment. 5. However, according to a regional VC, “Malaysian founders need to dream bigger” than just catering to the domestic market. Unlike its larger neighbours, Malaysia is home to only 34 million residents - the population of metropolitan Jakarta (Jabodetabek). 6. Malaysia’s digital economy is also only USD 23 billion, compared to Indonesia’s (USD 82 billion) and Vietnam’s (USD 45 billion). This means that, in order to scale, Malaysian startups need to build for the region and beyond. 7. The Malaysian government is actively promoting the local startup ecosystem. From regulatory reforms to seed capital for local VCs, Malaysia wants to have 5,000 start-ups by 2025, and aims to become "a top 20 country in the global start-up ecosystem by 2030".
