Kaiser, AHA among groups forming public health coalition | Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente and the American Hospital Association are among a number of groups uniting to form a new coalition that aims to strengthen the partnership between health systems and public health. [Becker's Hospital Review] The Common Health Coalition: Together for Public Health, which also involves the Alliance of Community Health Plans, the American Medical Association and AHIP, is focused on translating the "hard-won lessons" of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic to improve public health outcomes. The coalition will initially focus on four areas: -Greater coordination between public health and healthcare systems -Building shared, well-maintained emergency preparedness plans -Establishing national standards for healthcare data that help identify health disparities -Modernizing infectious disease detection "The lessons we learned from the COVID-19 pandemic remain as urgent as ever and health care and public health institutions are ready to act on them," said Bechara Choucair, MD, coalition steering committee member and senior vice president and chief health officer at Kaiser Permanente. Members of The Global Preparedness Monitoring Board have signed a joint open letter together with over 40 former heads of state and global health leaders, calling for determined leadership of Pandemic Accord negotiations. With the formal deadline for adoption of an accord just four months away, the GPMB speaks in concert with colleagues from The Elders Foundation, the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response, Spark Street Advisors, Pandemic Action Network, and the Panel for a Global Public Health Convention on the critical importance of the Pandemic Accord for strengthening global preparedness. A strong Pandemic Accord is needed to ensure international coordination for preparedness, strengthen financial support for pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, ensure equitable access to medical countermeasures, and embed accountability for preparedness. Attention to all Public Health Practitioners, Today, I want to highlight the essence of Primary Prevention as a cornerstone of Public Health. As public health professionals, we must be aware that our mission extends beyond treatment. We are the architects of prevention and the first line of defense against diseases. Primary prevention is the shield that guards our communities before the arrow of illness is ever shot. It's the education that empowers, the vaccine that protects, and the policy that fortifies societal health. It's not merely a strategy but a philosophy that places the well-being of populations at the forefront. It’s official. Is COVID truly behind us? In June 2020, my career started right after college when I was hired as a COVID-19 investigator. Given the high prevalence and incidence rates, my public health department saw a need to develop a healthcare team that advised hospitals, physician groups, and other facilities that provided medical care on COVID guidance on a daily basis. In July 2020, they took a chance on me and promoted me to Supervisor for healthcare (at the age of 22; the youngest Supervisor at that time). I learned so much from this position. Societies cannot function without public health. We need it to understand the complexities of disease and the role community health has on influencing outcomes. While COVID-19 lives in the memory of most Americans, it has left a jarring impact on our present world and will inform policy decisions, global health strategy, and economic interdependence for decades to come. To hear that COVID-19 disease reporting is no longer required is upsetting to say the least, especially given the global (and local) implications. The foundation of my career lies on the idea that healthy communities is a collective endeavor. I’m cautiously optimistic about our future pandemic preparedness protocols, and I suspect this may set a dangerous precedent of negligence, limited hospital support, spotty COVID-19 disease surveillance, and decreased community urgency.

The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security launched the Practical playbook for addressing #health #misinformation. The playbook guides users in preparing for and responding to health misinformation, which is a growing #publichealth challenge. The playbook takes a hands-on approach to help public health practitioners, medical professionals, health communicators recognize and respond to health-related rumors and misinformation. It provides detailed tools, checklists, templates, and examples written in plain language to support users in: ▪ preparing for health-related rumors ▪ deciding when to act to address rumors ▪ determining which actions to take to address misinformation ▪ developing relevant and timely messaging, and ▪ gathering feedback about those messages.
