While most people look at a hospitalization due to substance misuse as a negative thing, I always make an effort with my patients and families to show them that this is an opportunity! An opportunity for the entire family to shift their perspective and learn healthier ways in which everyone can start to heal from the disease of addiction TOGETHER! I spent a little over a week with a patient and his parents, who were at a complete loss as to what to do about their son's drinking; but with every daily interaction we had, they were able to take the information I shared with them, and apply it at home. Instead of being afraid of what was going to happen when their son left the hospital, they now feel more confident in the ways in which they can best support him, and feel more at ease with the discharge plan.
