Building on the discussion on sustainable fashion in PR, I delved deeper into what constitutes sustainable practices in the fashion industry this week. It's not just a buzzword; it's about real, actionable change. Understanding Sustainable Fashion: ● Eco-friendly Materials: The foundation lies in using materials that have a minimal environmental impact. Think organic cotton, which uses less water and no pesticides, or recycled polyester, reducing plastic waste. ● Conscious Manufacturing: Sustainable fashion also encompasses ethical production processes. How we enable access to circularity is as important as the idea of true circularity? Vestaire Collective îs leading the way by not allowing listings of fast fashion brands. They want to raise awareness on the importance of buying less, but better quality fashion items and believe fast fashion, even in circularity, still doesn’t solve the problem of bad quaility garments that are overproduced. Its a bold stand and kudos to Vestaire to call out on quality. Good quality sustainable clothes are hard to find and Vestaire’s move will likely help. But what do we do about the stuff that is all created? Should we dump it all and restart? Is that viable? There is no one way to circularity - even if a fast fashion garment survives for2 years, instead of the first few months that someone wore it for, it saves carbon cost. Acc to research, extending the life of clothes by an extra nine months of active use would reduce carbon, water, and waste footprints by around 20–30% each. And one has to remember the rise of fast fashion was due to access to low priced items which still is one of the most important consumer consideration to move to alternative means, and will remain a key point for mass adoption. So please do what you can do - buy better, reuse more, buy more pre-loved.
