World Textile Information Network (WTiN)'s Zero Carbon Event Report is now available
Decarbonising the textile & apparel supply chain presents a golden opportunity for innovation, resource efficiency and, of course, the environment. It paves the way for a more sustainable future; mitigating climate risks and enhancing brand reputation.
The challenge ahead though, should not be underestimated. It is widely known the textile & apparel industry is a major global polluter, responsible for around 10% of greenhouse gas emissions. Its fast-fashion model, resource-intensive processes, reliance on fossil fuels and lack of circularity threaten global and regional climate targets and contribute to environmental degradation.
However, as regulations toughen, such as the incoming EU Green Deal that lays out stricter rules, mandatory eco-design requirements and the implementation of Digital Product Passports (DPP’s) to name a few, the textile & apparel industry is being forced to fast-forward its decarbonisation processes.
In this report, we assess the materials, technology and products across the value chain that are enabling the reduction of carbon emissions in textile & apparel manufacturing. While these technologies and materials are making great strides, much more uptake is required – though the political and financial climate is acting as a barrier to further commitment and investment.
