MTC Training’s Post

International Women's Day is a time to celebrate the remarkable achievements of women, and at MTC Training, we take great pride in the inspiring women who surround us. One such inspirational figure is our Chair, Heather Clarke, who reflects on the changes she's witnessed in the engineering sector since she embarked on her journey. Heather highlights the increasing representation of women in engineering, noting that while progress has been slow, positive changes are underway: "In 1992 when I started in engineering, there was approximately 6% of women in the sector within the UK. We now have around 16.5% female representation. The dial has been slow to move but thankfully this is now changing. I want women to see that you can create your own career journey. Being a mother and an engineer is not a barrier to progression if that is what you want. You can work full time or part-time have time with your children, care for your parents or have a side hustle. In today's world, your partner can help share the load as has been the case in my household, where we both worked part time to raise our family. Fundamentally we all need to support each other. To continue to move the dial in representation within engineering and to encourage more women into the profession, it will take everybody to help each other. That, for me, is really important. Engineering is difficult, you’ve got to want to do it, but first you’ve got to know that it IS an option." Heather's message highlights the significance of empowering women to follow their dreams and cultivating an environment where everyone can flourish. As we celebrate International Women's Day, let's persist in advocating for gender equality and standing together to overcome obstacles and achieve greater success. I am very thankful to those inside and outside of the work place who have enabled me to grow in ways I would never have believed. Something I now pass forward to help others grow and develop. Those who threw up barriers have taught me resilience but also how I can be different and help others navigate their own career paths. Happy International Womens Day. #iwd2024 #imeche
