Update: our dolphins are sticking around in the east 🐬 After almost a month, we still receive locations of two of our tagged Atlantic white-sided dolphins. The dolphins were tagged in a fjord in the Faroe Islands, after which they went their own way. One of the dolphins initially headed north, then changed its course to the south, lingering around the Wyville Thomson Ridge. The other dolphin went westward towards Iceland, and seems to prefer to stay near the Iceland Ridge. The current tracks of this year's dolphins are quite different compared to the journeys of the dolphins from last year. It is possible that the availability and distribution of their prey are influenced by the time of year. However, one aspect remains consistent, similar to our previously tagged Atlantic white-sided dolphins: their preference for the shelf edge is evident. I cross my fingers for many more days of receiving coordinates from these two dolphins! #TOPLINK #NorthAtlanticOcean

The Icelandic government will announce its decision on whaling licences on June 4th. Hvalur hf.'s application for a licence to hunt fin whales, which are vulnerable to extinction, has been pending for almost four months. Now, Minister Bjarkey Olsen Gunnarsdóttir, is close to making a decision. This is a pivotal moment for marine conservation. Iceland has the opportunity to become a leader, demonstrating that sustainable practices and respect for marine life are the future. Ending commercial whaling in Iceland could lead the way for other nations, including Norway and Japan. The protection of whales and dolphins is a global responsibility. I truly hope that Iceland can become a beacon of change. #EndWhaling #SaveTheWhales #Iceland #MarineConservation #Sustainability https://lnkd.in/eeQRsYru

Pleased to see another SC7 expedition underway. This brief but poignant discussion touches on the fact that the electric infrastructure that we rely on today to run SC’s economy and households took many decades to build and based on the blessings of economic growth is projected to need to double in a couple of decades or less! Think about that and ask yourself how is SC going to do it? As these two leaders discuss - we must do it and with balance and leadership.
Another great day on the trail. Southcarolina7.com

its time to act quick.
BREAKING: Whalers in Norway have killed the first minke whale of the 2024 whaling season. This year, Norway has set a quota of 1,157 minke whales—up from 1,000 in 2023 and 917 in 2022. Eleven whaling boats registered to whale this year, two of which have left port. https://lnkd.in/eGfkr-Ab “As consumer polls show, Norway's domestic market for whale meat is virtually nonexistent,” said Kate O’Connell, senior policy consultant for AWI. “As a result, the Norwegian whaling industry is increasingly reliant on peddling whale meat for dog food and shipping whale products to an equally diminishing market in Japan to try to stay afloat. It is time for Norway to bring this cruel and unnecessary industry to an end.” According to a 2022 poll commissioned by AWI, NOAH - for dyrs rettigheter and Whale and Dolphin Conservation, only 2% of Norwegians eat whale meat often, down from 4% in 2019. Only 1% of women said they ate whale meat often, and no respondents under age 35 said they ate whale meat often. Despite this dwindling consumer demand, Norway continues to flout the International Whaling Commission’s ban on commercial whaling and the CITES prohibition on international commercial trade in whale products. For sailors crossing the equator for the first time, the traditions and rituals of 'crossing the line' remain an important rite of passage. Time at sea is by its very nature isolating, and even on a very short voyage a strong sense of community, albeit a temporary one, is often created. Traditions, ritual and celebrations are an important part of ensuring unity and staving off boredom. Perhaps one of the best known and longest enduring traditions is the initiation ceremony of ‘Crossing the line’ or ‘Sea Baptism’, which takes place when a ship crosses the equator. The first recorded descriptions are from around 400 years ago and its origins remain hazy. There are some suggestions that it formed an important test to ensure the men you were sailing with, and thus dependent upon, were able seafarers. A different interpretation is much more steeped in superstition – appeasing Neptune the god of the sea before ‘crossing the line’. See Captains Action @captainsaction5732 for the video and more !
