This training is based on the concept that effective delegation is a potent force multiplier, enabling the unit as a whole to achieve more and do it faster than if the execution of tasks is tightly controlled by senior leaders. Simply put, it is emphasized—relentlessly and forcefully—to new Marine leaders that one of the fastest ways of becoming an effective leader is to actively practice and master the science of delegation, to the point that they can artfully employ this critical skill and achieve far better results. Last Leadership 30 for 2023 was not a disappointment by any stretch. I am sure our global audience all felt the same about what they heard this morning from Commodore Grant O'Loughlan, Royal Australian Navy. It was refreshing to listen to not only his story but the teaching moments he picked up along the way, and there are a few. My main takeaways were - one person can't do it all, micro managing means I am being less effective as a leader, 'dictatorial' doesn't work long term, there is good stress and bad stress - find the good stress, mistakes are okay unless they are continual, learn from the best leaders, kind -v- nice and above all, be consistent. This Veteran’s Day, Platinum Group Advisors wants to share some of the valuable skills our armed forces gain during their service. Leadership- Veterans participate in leadership training throughout their service. They understand rank/organizational structure and respect the organization. Discipline-During their service, discipline is a huge part of the culture. This rigor and consistency enable the individual to execute and succeed, even when the external environment continues to change. Change Management- They are always training for the unknown, creating several options or approaches that must be ready to deploy quickly. They are not afraid of change, they are prepared for change. Mission Driven - Individuals who serve in the armed forces are consistently educated on the mission of their work. They are given a roadmap to make the mission tangible. Sounds a lot like a strategic plan. Leadership is rarely black and white. While principles guide us, reality often presents us with a thousand shades of gray. Policies and procedures are essential for maintaining order and uniformity, but people and situations are far more complex. In 2019, I was diagnosed with breast cancer just as my contract with the Navy was coming to an end. The uncertainty of my diagnosis and whether the Navy would approve my reenlistment added another layer of complexity. My leader at the time faced a discretionary decision: What was in the best interest of the Navy and his Sailor? He chose to lean into the gray area of policy, weighing the broader impact of his decision. In the end, he allowed the Navy to gain a top-performing sailor for another six years, who in turn got selected for Chief that next year, and I learned a valuable lesson about true leadership. This experience taught me that exceptional leadership often involves navigating these gray areas with compassion and wisdom. While principles and policies provide a necessary framework, true leadership recognizes when to adapt and make judgment calls for the greater good of both the organization and the individuals within it. Leaders who embrace this approach foster environments where people feel valued and supported, ultimately driving better outcomes for everyone involved. I’m thankful for the leaders I’ve had in my career, and thankful for lessons like these that allow me to become a better leader to those I lead. #leadership

✨Leading the March: The Leadership Lessons Learned in the Military 🇺🇸The military isn't just about following orders. It's about forging leaders. My time in service instilled in me a leadership style that's all about empowerment, agility, and support. 💪Empowering my team is what truly fuels my satisfaction. I learned early on that the best leaders don't micromanage. They equip their people with the tools and trust they need to thrive. It's about recognizing and fostering the strengths of each individual, creating a space where everyone feels valued and their contributions matter. 🏃Agility is key in any environment, but especially in the fast-paced world we live in today. The military thrives on the ability to adapt to changing situations. As a leader, I translate that into a willingness to embrace new ideas, adjust strategies on the fly, and be open to learning from anyone on the team, regardless of rank or experience. 😎But there are times when leading the march becomes necessary. There will be moments when clear direction and a strong hand are what's needed to navigate a challenge or seize an opportunity. That doesn't mean being a dictator, but rather demonstrating that the path ahead is achievable, and inspiring your team to follow. Sometimes, you gotta take the bull by the horns and show everyone, with cadence and purpose, that “it” can be done. The skills I honed in the military haven't stayed there. They're the foundation of my leadership approach today.
