The weeks following Christmas are often busy for retailers with gift exchanges and returns. Your Better Business Bureau offers these tips to help your holiday returns run as smooth as possible:

Someone please explain the business model of having a 40% off coupon for online orders only. I had a dozen items at a national craft store chain in my cart, walked up to pay for them and tried to use the coupon, and was told it was "against store policy" for them to honor my coupon since I was shopping in person. I left my items there, drove 0.7 miles back to my house, placed the order online, and two hours later drove back and picked up my items, now 40% off. What a waste of time for store employees, who had to restock my original items (I offered to put them back but they insisted I leave them), and pull my order again. (The original items were still not restocked when I returned to the store. They were sitting in a bin behind the counter.) It was a waste of my time too - two trips to the store, 30 min in the store selecting my items, and then another 20 minutes at home finding them on the website. Corporate America - can we do better?

E-commerce accounts or their customers pay for convex mirror(s) plus freight. The UPS charges for a 26” convex mirror to Colorado zip code 80631 is $55.19 and to California zip code 91801 is $83.43. In many cases, the UPS charges are greater than the convex mirror price. There are no UPS charges in purchasing a convex mirror at a retail outlet. OPPORTUNITY? Purchasing convex mirrors at a retail outlet also lets the user see the product before purchasing, get information on the proper convex size and address a security/safety issue immediately. Remember, consumers and contractors that may have a need for safety/ security convex mirrors shop at your store(s). Call or email.

It should be obvious that retailers have a right to cancel transactions in some circumstances, including in cases of honest mistakes. However, when retailers do make such a cancellation, they should not have a right to keep any of the consideration that they received from the parties who attempted to make the purchase.

Is it worthwhile buying specials from the major retailers with a store card? It definitely is, by more 17% for Checkers, Shoprite and PnP. There are two types of specials - bundles and straight price reduction. Checkers and Shoprite favour the straight price discount, while PnP favours the bundle route (which is more complex for the consumer). Checkers has more than double the number of specials than PnP
