Me: "What do you want to do when you get out of the military?"
Servicemember: "I'm not sure."
Me: "Law enforcement? I see you have a degree in criminal justice....?"
Servicemember: " No absolutely not. No interest at all."
Me: "Then why did you study criminal justice?"
Servicemember: " That's the major the education center gave me most credits for... based on my military service... mostly I just wanted to get promoted..."
Me: 🤦♂️
Folks.... I have this conversation more time than I care to recall. If you work at an education center on a military base, please have a conversation with your servicemember about what they want to do when they get out.
Look... follow me for a minute... a retiree is typically between 38 and 44 years old. That's too old for just about every law enforcement agency, nationwide. Even if they could get into their respective academy, not a lot of us 40+ year olds want to be running and gunning and hopping fences... our knees can't take the abuse anymore.
So why are we steering them towards a quick, fast, in a hurry degrees in a field they will never pursue just to boost their chances at making E8?
At best, that is the very definition of short sighted. At worst, bad actors are hawking useless degrees for the sake of numbers and government dollars. But I won't go so far as to question motivations.
#transitioningservicemembers.... GET A DEGREE YOU CAN USE AFTER YOU GET OUT! The path of least resistance is not the path that leads to a high return on investment! There is a world beyond the E8 promotion board!
Someone tell me I'm wrong... or tell me I'm crazy... or tell me I'm not the only one seeing this!
As I wait for your responses... I'll be over here in the corner banging my head against the table.
