Your Beach Access to San Onofre State Park is at Risk – Sign the Petition Now! 👏 San Onofre State Beach is a treasured natural resource for millions of people from across Southern California and beyond. Since 1971, California has leased the 6.5-mile shoreline as a state park from the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton for the sweetheart deal of $1 for the duration of the 50-year lease. That lease will expire on August 31 of this year and must meet new federal regulations that demand fair market value. The Surfrider Foundation appreciates and applauds the past and present leadership of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and California State Parks for their dedication to preserving this unique stretch of undeveloped coastline and their ongoing commitment to maintaining public access at San Onofre State Beach. While all parties involved in the lease renewal have publicly committed to maintaining public access, a federal statute (10 U.S. Code § 2667) now mandates fair market value for military land leases. This requirement, coupled with federal bureaucracy, could create complications despite the best of intentions. That’s why Surfrider is working with the San Onofre Parks Foundation and local stakeholders to protect the public’s ability to access and enjoy this iconic shoreline, as well as the long-term preservation and natural resilience of San Onofre State Beach. On June 6, 1944, thousands of men stormed the beaches of Normandy during World War II. By nightfall, about 175,000 Allied troops and 50,000 vehicles were ashore with nearly a million more men on the way that summer. The Normandy invasion was one of the great turning points of 20th-century history. An immense army was placed in Nazi-occupied Europe, never to be dislodged. Unfortunately, with war comes casualties. Approximately 135,000, including 29,000 killed and 106,000 were wounded or missing. The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in France is located in Colleville-sur-Mer, on the site of the temporary American St. Laurent Cemetery, established by the U.S. First Army on June 8, 1944, as the first American cemetery on European soil in World War II. The cemetery site, at the north end of its half-mile access road, covers 172.5 acres and contains the graves of 9,386 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations. On the Walls of the Missing, in a semicircular garden on the east side of the memorial, are inscribed 1,557 names. Rosettes mark the names of those since recovered and identified. Today, we remember and memorialize those who gave their lives 79 years ago on those beaches and never got the chance to return home to their families and loved ones. Why diversity matters inside newsrooms: Most news outlets that picked up this story echoed a narrative painted in the U.S. Coast Guard statement (one that anonymizes mariner ethnicity and swells with savior complex). There's harm when advancing narratives like these, whose use continues to normalize the rhetoric of colonization. After all, there's another telling of this story that might center and celebrate the grit and ingenuity of the mariners. This particular telling of the story, by CNN, highlights that rescue efforts were facilitated by a Micronesian petty officer speaking to the mariners in their own language (8 languages are spoken in the FSM). Does this mean the mariners wrote the message that led to their rescue in a language they don't typically use? How did your go-to news outlet cover this story? Did they get it right?
