Great to hear about how an investment bank approach GenAI. Very informative, here are my notes: - The biggest use case so far is to boost developers' productivity. GS has a few thousand developers, about 1/3 of its employees. - GS adopts a “platform” approach: • Can orchestrate a variety of models including large foundation models such as ChatGPT and Gemini and open-source models such as Llama. • Can create a set of guardrails and integrations within the company to get best out of these models in the safest way. Like multi-cloud, GS is partnering with Google Cloud, AWS and Microsoft Azure. - Models: • GS has no intention now to build its own foundation model. The strategy instead is to combine existing foundation models that are good for reasoning with proprietary models for information retrieval and internal data processing. • He mentioned ChatGPT from OpenAI, Gemini from Google, Claude from Anthropic and LangChain as a tool to create agents. • GS has a copilot-like tool for its own proprietary programming language Slang, built on top of Llama model. It is still an open question whether one should fine-tune the model weights or just present the right examples to the model, e.g., RAG. • He said the way data is fed into the model is the secret source. He mentioned GS has experimented with its own embeddings. - He thinks the use cases will evolve from 5-second tasks like code completion to 5-hours or even 5-days tasks like database migration. - He also talks about the efficiency gains beyond developer productivity: automating manual tasks like document processing and meetings briefing, market prediction for short-term trading and long-term investment.
