Some insightful tips from Harvard University on becoming a better public speaker.

No one owes you their time and attention. That’s true whether you’re a professional speaker or presenting to a business owner. To get to share a message in front of the masses — it’s a privilege. You must deliver to audiences something worth their time. Present often enough and eventually you get to speak in the same venues as the other authors and thought-leaders you admire. You get to advance your craft by watching other masters. I remember when I read Never Split the Difference, written by the Black Swan Group’s founder Chris Voss. He’s a master, not just in hostage negotiation, but in understanding human psychology and influence. If you’re growing your business and executive presence, public speaking is one of the most important forms of expanding your influence and professional reputation.

I thought great speakers were born, not made. Turns out I was wrong. People think public speaking is about: - Charisma - Confidence - Natural Talent But you don't need these to be an effective speaker. Sure, they help, but they aren't everything. Public speaking is more about preparation, understanding your audience, and delivering a clear message. Anyone can learn to be a great speaker with the right approach. This is the framework I based my TED Talk on. Steal this for your next presentation: 1️⃣ Focus on one major idea. For me, that was the timeless human pursuit of beauty,  and how societal standards have evolved over time. 2️⃣ Spark curiosity. I began my talk by asking, "Who here has ever had a procedure to improve their appearance?" This question engaged the audience right away, it made them reflect on their own behaviors and created a curiosity about where the talk would lead. 3️⃣ Build your idea with familiar concepts. Use relatable metaphors. A great example is when people explain their business as ‘the Uber for…’ 4️⃣ Make sure you are adding value to others. If it only serves you, reconsider its value.
