I Loved the Women of Wearables (wearables, health tech & femtech) Menopause 2.0 conference today! As Rachel Braun Scherl mentioned it is SO energising being in a room with women discussing advancements in women’s health. 🧡 I think it’s so important to normalise the conversation within women and to lean not on the ‘problem’ but all of the great positive solutions that are coming into this area. Lucy Perez from McKinsey & Company explained the economic opportunity being $120billion which is thought to be an underestimate. The partnership between Clue and ŌURA shows that research is at the core with a goal to bring science forward and help close the gender health gap. Alicia Clausel, MPH, MS and @corneliahainer hosted a great discussion about perimenopause and discussed that there is such a lack of education and culture of silence, it is clear that new data emerging from this partnership will be so beneficial in this area. Stasa Stankovic’s keynote speech was purely fascinating about genetic changes effecting the timing of menopause and noval therapeutics which could potentially target genes to alter ovarian lifespan and potential investigations being developed in this area. There were so many other great discussions throughout the afternoon particularly around workplace benefits schemes and how a great ROI had been made. 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 „𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥“ 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐮𝐬? Even today, women facing menstrual pain and heavy bleeding, are often dismissed as „hysterical“. Many discover only when they want to become pregnant, that they suffer from serious health conditions like #endometriosis. 😲 Shockingly, 1 in 10 women are affected and it can take up to 8 years to get a diagnosis, with few treatment options. During my time as Global Brand Lead for Endometriosis at Bayer, we launched awareness campaigns and shared #patient stories at a Stand Alone event with HCPs. Her emotional story moved even seasoned gynecologists. Personal experiences, like another one shared at the HBA ELS last week by a courageous young women on stage, prove that these women are not hysterical, but have a serious health problem. I personally know so many women who are suffering from endometriosis that affects their everyday work and life. Luckily, innovative FemTech solutions are emerging, such as wearable devices that monitor symptoms and AI-driven diagnostic tools to help those women. 💡 New data about endometriosis in Germany and Austria is also coming later this year. While traditionally focused on acute care, this paradigm now extends beyond perimenopause into emergency, primary, and social care settings. This expansion enables a holistic approach, ensuring continuous and integrated care for all patients. Perimenopause and Its Challenges Perimenopause, marked by fluctuating hormones and symptoms like hot flushes and mood swings, requires careful monitoring. The future of remote monitoring and telehealth is fast becoming a reality for many of us. Shari Graydon bravely describes her journey with a unique cardiovascular health issue specific to women that is not often appreciated in our communities. Wearable devices are rapidly becoming an important tool for obtaining individual cardiovascular health data that could be incorporated into a more precise health plan. This may be particularly important for women with unique cardiovascular health issues. Yet, our communities need more than wearable devices to optimize women's cardiovascular health. This first-person account is an example of a vascular problem that can occur in women who are otherwise exceptionally fit and healthy. Our communities need specialized women's cardiovascular health clinics to promote women's cardiovascular health and ensure we have the diagnostic and treatment capabilities necessary to optimize women's health. I am often asked why we at the Libin Cardiovascular Institute are creating a women's cardiovascular health clinic given that both men and women can develop heart disease. The physiology of menopause and perimenopause has been understudied. However, wearable device leader ŌURA and period tracker startup Clue are now teaming up with academic researchers to change that. This gap in research isn’t limited to women entering menopause. Until the 1980s, women of reproductive age were largely excluded from clinical research. Hormonal fluctuations were seen as confounding factors, and the assumption was made that the male body could serve as a general model for all people. Now, researchers are working to fill the knowledge gaps we've inherited. I’m a big fan of democratising research, and I’m thrilled to see that women’s health is finally being taken seriously. Many founders are focusing on this critical area. A few notable ones include Susanne Feldt with Hermaid, a virtual women's clinic providing access to medical advice on hormone imbalances, especially for women going through menopause; Samina Usman, founder of Femilog® , Menopause Health Tracker; Prof. Sharron Hinchliff, companies like Midi Health; Elektra Health and many more. What a feet: A team of researchers from #NTUsg, in collaboration with clinicians from Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the National Healthcare Group, has launched a new mobile application, WellFeet, aimed at enhancing foot care for diabetic patients. Unlike other existing applications that primarily focus on the progression of diabetic foot ulcers, WellFeet not only educates patients and caregivers about their condition but also enables users to track daily activities, including medication intake, diet, and exercise routines. The app underwent thorough testing with 40 patient-caregiver pairs at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, and after one month of using the app, the study participants observed positive changes in foot care behaviour and diabetes self-care routines. Leader of the study, NTU Associate Professor Andy Ho, Head of Psychology at the School of Social Sciences and a faculty member of the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine said: “WellFeet reflects our commitment to addressing the unique needs of patients and caregivers at risk of or dealing with diabetic foot ulcers.
