You want to know something that drives me crazy? I mean, it's drives me absolutely nuts! What I SAY is important to me and what I ACTUALLY DO don't always line up. Now, I may be out on a limb here, but if you're a human (and I assume you are), then this might be true of you sometimes, too. Or maybe it's true more often than not. The gap between what's truly important to me and what I actually do is fascinating (and frustrating!) to me. How can we sort out how to align our use of capital (which I define as time, money, attention, and energy) with what's truly important to each of us? I wrote a weekly column for The New York Times for 10 years exploring that alignment, written two books on it, and done an endless string of public projects around it. Recently, I've focused all of my energy into answering this question on this podcast. “How did you get that guest on your podcast?” I just asked. It’s that simple. There’s no magic trick to getting what you want. You just have to get it. I’ve interviewed some of the biggest guests in the online space. What you don’t see is that I’ve sent 30X the amount of cold outreach. Yup, that involves me contacting people I don’t know. (ohhh scary) Thousands of emails, DMs, voice notes and video messages. With a constant stream of “No” in response. You get pretty numb to rejection, which is great. Because the next day, you get to do even more. All the rejection makes it worth it. Guests make or break your podcast. Get used to the rejection. Now, back to work. 

Turn small talk into meaningful dialogue with these 4 magic phrases that make people feel seen, valued, and heard: 1. How did you... 2. Tell me about... 3. What's it like... 4. In what way... They're empathetic. And you'll learn more about the person. For example: I asked my daughter's friend "What's it like to work at Village Burger?" She said, "chaotic." It led to a great story about how the kitchen operates. And my hunch is a more meaningful conversation than "what did you do today?"
