All Nigerian #cadets can relate to the fact that struggling to get our foot in the door and gain valuable seatime experience is like second world war (world war II) I've been writing on this topic, and in my recent content on this same matter, I came across a comment that I thought I should share. It seems it's a proven method, as many #professionals have told me the same, though I've tried two of the approaches and they didn't work for me. Perhaps you may be lucky, who knows? This valuable insight was shared by Samuel Moses, who communicated the idea in the comment section of my last post. He identified some #effective ways to secure #placements on #ships for #training. According to Samuel Moses, "One of the easiest ways to secure placements on ships for training is through the #Maritime_Labour_Department at #NIMASA. He advises submitting complete documents and following up consistently to increase chances of success. Moses also suggested obtaining a cadet #recommendation_letter from #NIMASA and submitting it to your chosen #company, as "most companies require this letter to comply with the #Cabotage_Law." I've tried this approach, but when I went to the #NIMASA's office in #Port_Harcourt, they told me to first find a company willing to take me onboard. They said I could only collect the letter if the company requests it. But which company is even willing to listen to you? Additionally, he recommended visiting companies in #Lagos or Port Harcourt with your documents and recommendation letter, as "this personal touch can be more effective than online submissions." Another approach I've tried is to visit companies in person, but right from the gate, you won't even be allowed to gain access to the HR... Another approach Moses suggested was seeking engagement with #shipping_companies or #maritime_organizations like #NPA, #NIMASA, or #Shippers_Council as an #IT_student. This can provide opportunities to meet industry professionals and #seafarers who can assist in getting #onboard with just one phone call. For those with an ND, Moses advises enrolling for an 11/4 rating #watch_keeping_certificate and progressing to 11/5 or applying directly for 11/5 with your HND. He notes that this route is taken by over 30% of #officers onboard and can lead to working as an #AB or #OS, gathering #sea_time. Maybe by trying these approaches, you can increase your chances of success and gain the seatime experience you need to advance your career. I wish us all well.

The Changing Dynamics of Life at Sea. As a seasoned seafarer who has sailed on both bulk carriers and container ships, it is disheartening to witness the evolving dynamics of sea life. The maritime industry has traditionally been known for its emphasis on professionalism, competence, and meritocracy. However, a troubling trend has emerged, wherein promotions seem to be influenced more by personal connections, boot-licking, and ass-kissing than by the seafarers’ actual skills and competence. The Shift in Promotional Criteria: In the past, promotions onboard ships were typically based on an individual’s competence, experience, and dedication to their duties. Seafarers earned higher ranks through hard work, proficiency in their tasks, and a commitment to safety and efficiency. Unfortunately, there is now a noticeable shift towards favoritism, where personal relationships and sycophantic behavior seem to play a more significant role in career advancement. The Impact of Boot-licking on Professionalism: Boot licking, or the act of excessively flattering senior officers in an attempt to gain favor, has become an unwelcome norm on many vessels. This behavior erodes the professionalism that has long been associated with the maritime industry. Instead of recognizing and rewarding the skills and dedication of seafarers, promotions now appear to hinge on the ability to curry favor with those in higher ranks. The Erosion of Competence-Based Criteria: Traditionally, promotions were a result of a seafarer’s ability to manage the responsibilities associated with higher ranks. Competence, experience, and a proven track record were the benchmarks for career progression. However, the present scenario suggests a departure from these principles. Seafarers find themselves in situations where forming personal connections and engaging in flattering behavior may carry more weight than their actual qualifications and proficiency. The Consequences for Maritime Safety: The implications of this shift in promotional criteria extend beyond the career prospects of individual seafarers. It raises concerns about the overall safety and efficiency of maritime operations. When promotions are not based on merit, there is a risk that individuals may find themselves in roles for which they are not adequately prepared. This compromise in competence could jeopardize the safety of the crew, the vessel, and the environment. Conclusion: The transformation of sea life from a merit-based system to one influenced by boot- licking and personal connections is undoubtedly a cause for concern. Seafarers, who have dedicated their lives to this noble profession, deserve a fair and just system that recognizes their skills and contributions.
