How can we use #AI to build the future of food? 💡🌱🇨🇦 #PlantForward2024 I was thrilled to talk about how we can use #artificialintelligence to create more sustainable, efficient, ethical and equitable food systems at Plant Forward in Toronto last week, what we're building at Future Ocean Foods, and what the opportunities are for #Canada on #TheRoadTo25Billion 🇨🇦🌱 For #EarthDay2024, here are a few highlights: 🌱 Our current food systems are terribly inefficient, inhumane and wasteful - they simply will not allow us to feed 10 billion people by 2050 or combat the #climatecrisis. Food and climate are inextricably linked, and shifting to a #plantbaseddiet is the most impactful environmental change any of us can make. AI has the power to help us create better, faster food solutions that are good for people and good for the planet 🌎 Imagine, for example, AI being used to optimize plant protein crop production, compute the necessary scale required for an alternative protein product to reach price parity, and to rapidly improve the taste and texture of plant-based #alternativeprotein products for widespread consumer adoption. 🌊 AI has the power to help us, finally, accurately measure the true #environmentalfootprint of our food. While significant improvements have been made recently in measuring the environmental impact of plant and land-based animal protein, accurate measurements for conventional #seafood remain elusive 🌎🌊 This is critical research we are undertaking at Future Ocean Foods right now: working to develop tools to measure the true cost of seafood, especially vis-à-vis plant and cell-based alternatives 🐟🌱🐋🌊 🇨🇦 With Canada's long-held position as an agricultural powerhouse, our commitment to becoming a world leader in plant protein, Protein Industries Canada's 'Road to $25 Billion' roadmap and Prime Minister Trudeau's recent announcement of $2.4 billion in funding for AI, this is a huge opportunity for the country to shape and lead a new future for food - one that is sustainable, ethical, equitable and efficient 🌎 🌱🌊 Want to work together to build the future of food? I’m expecting my first child, and he’s due today 💙🌊✨ A lot of magical things happened since I moved to Nova Scotia, on the Atlantic Ocean, last year. I launched Future Ocean Foods - the world’s first and only global alternative seafood association - and our child was conceived on the ocean, during my first trip to Cape Breton Island. In August, we took in PEI’s beautiful beaches, and we spent May to September swimming and kayaking in Chester NS, where I paddled alongside fish, crab, sea lions and even majestic minke whales. And where I took this photo, four months pregnant 🌊✨ I don’t usually post personal news on LinkedIn but as someone passionate about saving our oceans and the sentient beings in and around them, my work is deeply personal. Becoming a mother makes me feel even more committed to helping transform our food system to be more ethical, equitable and sustainable. Some of the most brilliant and successful businesswomen I know are mothers.
