Rosilyn Temple, Founder & Program Director of KC Mothers in Charge, sheds light on the harsh reality faced by Black-led nonprofits in securing funding. Despite the critical role they play in community safety and support, these organizations often find themselves "overlooked by so many big grantees and federal funding", says Rosilyn. "That's a big thing that really hurts small Black-led [run] organizations." KC Mothers in Charge is a Nonprofit Catalyst Grantee that serves as a beacon of hope for those affected by the tragedy of homicide. Rosilyn Temple founded the Kansas City chapter of Mothers in Charge in 2014, after losing her son PeeWee to homicide in 2011. "As a Black woman, people tell you that you're not going to make it. Well here I stand going on 11 years as an organization in this community." Today, KC Mothers In Charge operates as a team of four and continues their work to reduce violent crime through prevention, education and intervention. United Way is proud to support their mission. We met with five Black nonprofit leaders for a conversation centered around these challenges, with a specific focus on the ongoing struggle for adequate funding. Stay tuned as we share more stories.
