Verizon just debuted a new logo. Yes, it does look quite a bit like Netflix - Nearly a decade after its controversial rebrand with Pentagram, Verizon tapped Turner Duckworth for a new logo/brand update that launches today - The wordmark maintains its typeface, but gives it a bold red paint job. The red check you might remember is gone. Now, the hero is the letter V - That V looks…a lot like the Netflix N that debuted in 2016! But its vertex emanates a warm glow, and even various bits of media. That glow is meant to symbolize “a never ending flame and energy in the truth,” says Ricardo Aspiazu, which “radiates from our DNA to showcase the power inside of us” - Talking to the team behind the design, the update is all about repositioning Verizon from invisible infrastructure company to a more exciting “experience and life company”—or what, in the brand system’s practice, puts Verizon much closer to looking like a media company unto itself (much like Netflix) Read the full breakdown with lots more on the brand and its evolution here:

Same font, different colors, lost the check mark. Not a really big change at all.

I’m a little perplexed by why they did this, but I suppose the logo in particular, is only a small move away from the original.

The logo does remind me of the classic "Netflix N," I wonder why they didn't make the "V" more like a "check." That could've been cool and would've served as a nice bridge between the original logo and the new one!

I love it and I’m very happy for the team. whatever happened with Pentagram sounds unfortunate. Just like the Pepsi symbol we’ll get used to this. Maybe cuz I’m gen X, I feel like I’m changing 20/50 Valvoline oil on my Beamer in the 80s.

For me it looks more like a Valvoline rebrand than a Verizon rebrand.

Good overview! If you hadn't mentioned the Netflix N I never would have made the comparison myself. 1. it's missing any of the classic cinemescope curvature 2. the V actually nods at some bending or folding while the N simply overlaps with elevation. While the Pentagram checkmark symbol felt like the result of group grope and compromise the swiss modernism really functioned as a solid and ownable brand platform. The V as mask or container feels trend chasing and limiting but perhaps it will grow on me, too!
