Mental health first aid (MHFA) has become very popular as an approach to supporting staff mental health and wellbeing. But does it actually work? The best form of evidence to assess effectiveness are randomised control trials (RCTs). The Cochrane Collaboration summarise the evidence from original RCTs and publish the results in systematic reviews that are published in The Cochrane Library. A recent systematic review published through the Cochrane Library examined data from 21 RCTs that included over 20,000 people. The review sought to understand if MHFA improves mental health and wellbeing. The review reported that MHFA had no significant benefits on mental health or wellbeing. There was not enough data to explore if MHFA reduces the need for mental health services and there was not enough high quality evidence to determine if MHFA is better than no intervention at all for employee mental health. However, the authors do say that they “found some evidence of potential benefit for MHFA trainees on outcomes such as mental health knowledge and reducing stigma, however results were at high risk of bias and often imprecise.” At this time, the gold standard of evidence does not support MHFA training for directly improving employee mental health and wellbeing. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #wellbeing #mhfa #mentalhealthfirstaid #evidence #systematicreview #cochrane https://lnkd.in/gKJt7JtC
