We often speak about human centered technology, or using technology for good. In a capitalist focused world, technology is often a tool for business, commerce and the articles are plentiful. This is an example of Technology serving the highest good of all. Heart centered technology that sees Trauma, and peoples stories. The story of a missing child ripples and thrashes through families and communities around the world. As Kairos DCC embraces the meaning of Restorative commerce, trading value isn’t merely fueled by exchanging money. There are many organizations working with people impacted by systems— another form of value exchange. So, we wanted to celebrate the work this AI team is doing to restore families. There are millions of missing children around the world, and this use case warmed our hearts:

I love showing the world around me examples of what heart centered technology, designed by purpose driven humans can do. This is the why behind all that Janine Kasper, MBA and I do. Even though the work to date has been arduous like swimming upstream, it has helped us fuse deep connections with community partners and heart centered organizations and cultivate a deep understanding of disruptive and abusive commerce systems like human trafficking. Most of all it fuels our mission and purpose and activates our hearts. Like a puzzle waiting to be solved, this work makes us spring out of bed every morning because we know solving it will serve the highest good of all. Our communities are at the heart of commerce, trade and treasury. Isn’t it time to shift our focus to restorative business models that circulate tools like money and technology to build bridges that help everyone unlock their source and store of value? If you need an external push... Then get a Coach, A Paid Community Or - Build a small Accountability Group! Anyways... Just make sure you begin to take actions and Move Forward! The recent collaboration between USC CAIS, UCLA's California Policy Lab, and LAHSA is a groundbreaking stride in addressing racial bias and fair housing for the homeless in LA. By fusing AI with social work, their three-year CESTTRR project aims to refine the housing resource allocation process and confront racial disparities. The key innovation here is the use of data science to enhance the intake assessment, guided by a Community Advisory Board, to ensure that the distribution of aid is both community-driven and equitable. What's striking about this initiative is the proactive approach to reduce stress and bias during the intake process, which is often a critical yet overlooked aspect. The involvement of case managers and those with lived experiences in shaping the project underscores the commitment to a holistic, fair solution. The project's AI models are designed not just to predict adverse outcomes but also to address homelessness at its roots, which has shown promise in reducing homelessness rates by improving the success of housing allocations. Moreover, the project's openness in sharing Python software packages with social service agencies reflects a dedication to transparency and scalability. This initiative is a testament to the power of collaborative, interdisciplinary effort in tackling complex social issues. As these AI-driven solutions are implemented in other states, they represent hope for broader systemic change. A moment of silence for conferences 🕯 Ever attend a work conference or professional gathering and find yourself exhausted halfway thru Day 1? Me: 🙋♀️ As a social worker and former elected official, I attend countless professional conferences and gatherings meant to connect us with colleagues in the field, share important information and to be fun. The agenda would look something like this: 8am: Breakfast 8:30am: Opening Plenary 9:30am-12pm: Workshops 12-1pm: Lunch 1-4pm: Workshops 4pm: Closing panel 5:00pm: Presentations (optional) 6pm: Dinner Even if I loved the organization putting on the event or was excited to reconnect with folks, I would feel exhausted just looking at the agenda 😫 Truth is many folks skip out on some portion of the day - to rest and connect with each other authentically - so my question is when will we change how we gather? The first computer marketed to women, featuring unique touches like a tissue dispenser and an emery board space bar! While the Petticoat 5 is not real, it serves as a reminder of the often-overlooked role women played in the early days of computer programming. 👩💻 Ada Lovelace, the original computer programmer and visionary Countess of Lovelace, was born in 1815 and possessed a distinctive perspective on mathematics. At just 17, she met Charles Babbage, who shared his plans for a revolutionary calculating machine. Babbage asked Ada to document his work, and in her writings, she envisioned a computer capable of much more than just crunching numbers. She suggested, "A computer can do anything that can be noted logically" – not limited to numbers but encompassing words, pictures, and music. Although Babbage's machine never materialised, Ada's forward-thinking ideas left a lasting impression on future generations. All across the country, people are searching for ways to positively impact democracy at the local level. I'm always surprised and delighted when people stumble onto us at CivicLex and reach out to learn more about what we're up to. For our first few years, we had a hard time articulating exactly what CivicLex was. We don't quite fit the mold for most of the other types of civic infrastructure out there. A year or so ago, through our LION: Local Independent Online News Publishers Sustainability Audit, the wonderful Bene Cipolla encouraged us lean in to our uniqueness. For us to be confident in our uniqueness, we decided that we needed to clearly articulate our model. LION's Sustainability Audit program (one of the best things going in the broader democracy field, in my opinion) then supported a series of staff retreats and personal reflections at the tail end of last year where we set aside our daily tasks and thought critically about our work, operations, and sustainability. What came out of this introspection was a new model for CivicLex -- one that strengthens civic health at the local level by improving three sets of conditions: civic literacy, social cohesion, and how our institutions engage the public in decision-making. We clearly defined the five strategies we use to do that, and the activities, metrics, outcomes, and impacts we're tracking to understand if it's working.
