Pulse on Purpose: The Truist Elite Advisor Summit at Walt Disney World, and Guiding clients through a "Purpose Driven Wealth Experience." Attending the Truist Elite Advisor Summit at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort was both an honor and pivotal moment in my journey… It was magical. Surrounded by peers and industry leaders, I gained invaluable insights and skills to better serve physicians and healthcare executives. I was reminded of the tireless energy physicians pour into education, training, family, and long hours “on call” as they live out their purpose… And the critical role my team and I can play at #TruistWealth in helping clients achieve financial goals and find work-life balance. Collaborating with amazing partners, I learned new strategies and approaches tailored to the unique needs and desired experiences of my clients. But success isn’t just about top performance and professional growth- it is about holistic well-being. Starting my day with early morning exercise set a positive tone, while meals with top performers fostered meaningful connections and idea exchange. Unplugging from my daily "at home" responsibilities to both focus and find rest was equally vital. The Summit allowed me to recharge and return to serve and live purposefully with renewed vigor. On the theme of #ThinkingaboutProductinPublic and #alwaysrecruiting-- “It’ll break your heart – and when you stop caring, you need to get out.” At the end of the 1996 movie NIGHT FALLS ON MANHATTAN, Andy Garcia’s character, as the new NYC District Attorney, gives a speech to incoming DAs about what they are going to face. As a person whose 30 years of professional career has centered around service to the public good, there’s a theme in this speech that hit home with me the first time I heard it which I revisit multiple times a year: “it’ll break your heart – and when you stop caring, you need to get out.” In my professional life I have found that that making a real difference to public sector outcomes requires: 1.      Investing with all you’ve got in what you’re trying to accomplish 2.      Weathering the heartbreak generated repeatedly by the multitude of ways that government's general bias for oversight of process compliance over outcomes generation means that you won't be able to do what you see needs to be done 3.      Re-investing anyway 4.      Accepting/celebrating microscopic gains (which is, often, in itself, heartbreaking) 5.      Adjusting approach for the next pass at the windmill 6.    Repeating, again, and again. Long before I got into a Product role, at every heartbreak I’ve had a moment where I had to check-in again. And I have had to leave jobs because the latest heartbreak was finally too much to sustain and come back tomorrow as invested as I was yesterday. Today, I woke up after just such a heartbreak and found, gratefully, I’m even more invested today than I was yesterday. And to be honest, it has a lot to do with how powerful product-thinking – i.e. focusing on delivering RESULTS as proof of solutions, rather than "deliverables" as proof of requirements met – is at getting things done in the public sector. That speech ends: “But if you’re ready to take that kind of risk… welcome.” It's the DHCS Chief Operating Officer for Programs Chris Riesen who recommended @jpahlka's #RecodingAmerica to me (which I then promoted here). It’s a barnburner for a public-good servant like me. It’s been a hope infusion -- a reminder that in an organization led by commitments to producing the right and important outcomes, the essential tools of Product Thinking are deep assets: 1.   Understand and name what’s important to accomplish and what’s in the way of it 2.   Define Objectives and Key Results that would prove delivery of those outcomes 3.   Test ways to achieve them 4.   Measure the effectiveness of each approach 5.   Adjust approach as indicated 6.   Achieve outcomes. 7. Repeat. So, about that "#alwaysrecruiting": Even when I don’t have a job to offer, I’m still interested in knowing anyone who knows the kind of heartbreak they’re signing up for and keeps investing anyway because they've seen, used, and know the power of Product Thinking. Vanguard's long-rumored purchase of Centene's abandoned HQ continues two trends in Charlotte - 1) financial services job growth, and 2) major employers' consolidation from leased space to owner-occupied space. While financial services hiring slowed in 2023, Charlotte has added more than 13,000 financial services jobs, a 12% increase, since 2020. At the same time, major employers, including Ally, Duke Energy, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America, have shed leased space for build-to-suits or existing corporate-owned real estate. In fact, the last 3 office deals exceeding $50 million in Charlotte were sold to owner-users rather than institutional investors.
