If you're looking to build or buy a digital banking solution, remember these 4 C's. CONSUME: Don't waste energy, money, or time recreating the wheel. There are a clear set of table-stake features which you should aim to deliver as quickly an inexpensively as possible. Searchable transactions, payment scheduling, digital onboarding - take these off the shelf. Save your engineering horsepower to create differentiation. CREATE: You're not going to disrupt anything if you look and offer exactly the same as everyone else. Don't fool yourself. If you're a bank today - you're a tech company. That doesn't mean you need armies of developers, but you do need an elite squad to create the capabilities that make you stand apart from the crowd. COMPOSE: It's a features arms-race out there. The winners are the ones able to roll out new capabilities quickly. Sometimes this means building yourself, and sometimes integrating to best-in-class specialists and marketplace providers. This might be KYC, embedded wealth, or a multitude of emerging options. CONSTRICT (don't): The hidden enemy... Don't make technology choices that box-you-in. Make sure any tech choices are scalable, micro-services, and API-driven and provide you flexibility. JPMorgan Chase's head of consumer banking warned that checking accounts and other consumer banking products would become more expensive if regulators don't back off. This threat is both hypocritical and not credible. 2.) Tiptop, an app that helps consumers sell their unwanted possessions, is pivoting to become a BNPL-like embedded payment service. Neat idea, but it feels a bit too expensive for merchants and clunky for consumers to get significant traction. 3.) TechCrunch published an article about Plaid's growing traction with non-fintech enterprise customers. The framing of this story suggests to me that Plaid isn't as far along here as they would like us to believe (though they likely will get there eventually). 📚 Content Recommendations: 1.) Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and QED Investors published their second annual Global Fintech Report. 2.)
